At the beginning of April Kizzy twisted her fetlock in the field & strained her tendon sheath, she was really lame, it was very swollen. She went to a rehab yard for a month, had loads of cold therapy, bowen, laser & some cortisone & HA into the tendon sheath after it had been scanned & the scan was clear. She had another weeks box rest, then did 3 weeks walk, 3 weeks trot, 3 weeks canter & we resumed jumping small stuff on a surface at the end of June, the vet looked at it again, said she was sound, fine carry on, just left with a small windgall type swelling. 3 weeks ago had a dressage lesson, worked on shoulder in & half pass, up till this point she had felt lovely, even & soft in both reins, trainer agreed. Next time I rode, she was really against my hand, had a sj lesson & we improved it, but wasn't as nice as it had been. Leg filled a bit more in the recent hot weather, but continued work as not lame, & swelling recedes after work, been icing sometimes & using magnetic pulse boot. Anyway, tonight another dressage lesson, both hind legs taking even strides, but trainer says right hip is higher as Kizzy is tipping the saddle left, & we have less lateral bend to the right, have spoken to my sports massage therapist & he says the higher hip is a technical lameness, now panicing somewhat as we have some competitions coming up, she was definately softer & more even at the end of the lesson, & has never been unhappy to do what is asked, have tried to put minimal strain on the leg while building the fitness, she has been jumping fab, so could we have overdone it on the last dressage lesson?? & what should I do now, well done if you got this far!!

What's your gut feeling? If Kizzy is anything like H she'll "talk" to you and you'll know whether there's something wrong or not - The amount of times I've said to my trainer "H is not sound" when she doesn't look lame at all - but true enough she isn't sound - I'd get it scanned again (But that's me - I'm always worst case scenario! LOL!)

Hiya my mare severed her tendon sheath and is left with a windgall type swelling which sometimes gets bigger for no reason! Im constantly worrying about doing too much with her but I think she would let me know if she wasnt happy. If your woried about itpop her tp the vets x

I think I would get it scanned again to be on the safe side. My youngster got kicked on her leg and it caused the tendon sheath to get strained, which then got inflamed. In my case the vet said that the tendon itself is 100% fine so that my mare shouldnt have any problems in the future once its all settled down. (Mine had cortisone injections etc as well) - She was never lame except in trot on a turn so may not have been as bad as yours, but still a little similar. If so you should be OK in the end. Dont blame yourself for the schooling, just think of the mad things they do out in the field - it probably was self inflicted. I do sometimes think horses have a death wish!

I am/was supposed to be bringing mine back into work a week ago, but havent got around to it yet

I do hope your horse is OK, I'm sending you healing vibes down the PC!

I was really worried about my boys hock when when he didnt feel quite right behind several months after coming back into work after damaging the tendon - we hadnt done anyhting different and there was no real swelling or heat or anything (but its easy to image these things!!), so it did seem a bit odd and I was really paranoid he had re injured the tendon....... turned out it was his pelvis, not the hock, so perhaps its worth getting her back checked to be on the safe side??!

Back / pelvis problems often do seem to ease as the horse warms up, whereas a tendon would probably get worse the more you did, so it sounds quite possible and fits in with the symptoms of one hip being higher....

My chiropracter has never seen someone so happy to be told that their horses pelvis was wonky!!!!! But 15mins with the chiro and a couple of days taking it easy and he was right as rain again (as opposed to the months off for the tendon injury scenario!!)

good luck

Thanks for your kind replies, have got my sports massage therapist coming tomorrow who is really fab. Farrier came today & lifted her hind leg up quite high & she was unhappy, so it does seem she is sore higher up, or that the tendon sheath is still sore & she is compensating. There is no heat in the tendon sheath though, & she doesn't object to palpitation, lets just hope it is muscular higher up & sorted soon. Will ring vet Monday though & ask to rescan as insurance is up soon.
