In my lessons i have began to learn the basics of Leg yield, which is a lateral movement, i was just wondering if incase my horse's bum ever does swing out, how to bring it back underneath him, and how to get his rear end working with the rest of his body, i heard half halting with the reins helps to slow down the rest of his body to allow his bottom to catch up? Thanks

Er, not sure what is meant by "allowing the rest of his body to catch up" as the horse is generally attached to itself all over, but if the bum swings out all you should have to do is use your leg on that side to ask the hind end to step over and the outside rein to keep his body straight.

well unless its a slinky horse!!!http://www.horseforum.com/attachments/182369d1368209578-horse-slinky-745686_156d_625x1000.jpg - cant imagen that would be fun to leg yield...although good suppleness.....

the half halt doesnt start at the hands and reins...it starts with the legs giving an aid to increase impulsion and the hand merely prevents the horse to speed up and instead use the energy to 'lift' and 'push' from behind - it is a contact not to be pulled back on to 'sit' the horse.

it depends which way the bum is swinging..... to the direction you are going less 'over push' with the over pushing leg...but a stronger hold with that hand to remain straight
to the other direction....more over pushing leg, less forwards leg

however horse must maintain forwardsness throughout! and the bum should never catch up......that sounds like the horse is on the forehand, strung out, and pulling its self along with its front end! power/impulsion comes from the back end to the front end

I really think that you need to find yourself a good instructor and read as many books as you can by well-known instructors, instead of making it so obvious on here how little you know and then arguing with those very knowledgeable people who make time to try to help you.
