Hello

Just looking for any tips for teaching leg yield to a youngster from scratch? Preferably without using a helper on the ground.

Any thoughts appreciated, thanks! :)

I teach them out hacking once they have learned to move from pressure it is easy to teach them to move to the side of the road when asked, then back out again, it is in my view essential for any horse hacking on the roads to move when asked, once they get established you can ask them anywhere you want, never required anyone on the ground if starting from scratch they usually quickly pick it up.

I teach them by making it very easy for them to start with.

Get the on the qaurterline, apply the correct leg aid and place slightly more weight in the outside seatbone. They will naturally want to step under the weight, away from the pressure and back to the track. Make sure you don't block the outside shoulder, and the reins are just for a little half halt if required and slight bend.

If you make it easy for them to accomplish, they will soon understand the aids and be able to work with you rather than against you.
