Had a lesson on Saturday on Blue and we attempted some leg yielding, he seemed to find this quite hard (is much better one way than the other) and as i've only ever done it in walk before (was trotting in lesson) Blue thinks leg means go faster.

How can i teach him to move away from my leg when i ask for leg yield rather than just start running in trot which is kinda what he does at the moment?

I did it on the ground first with George using my hand and then the gentle touch of a whip just behind the girth to teach him what I meant. When I ride leg yield I find I really have to keep my outside hand firm and steady and look exactly where I want to go!

I think they all go faster to begin with with the one leg push, but that's no bad thing if you can try to contain him with your hands, if he is on the bit or accepting the contact, then you should be able to ask him for a bit of braking and block him a little forward, when asking for the sideways.
