Legalities of riding on the roads.

I did say BHS gold was a good thing to have but she said she had better things to spend £60 on.....

If she can think of better things to spend £60 on, I am sure she could find loads of better things to spend £4000 on! That was the cost of repairing the damage to the car that one of my horses did, having dumped his rider in woods and bolting off onto a main road. Luckily he collided with a stationery car otherwise the damage to the car and occupants could have been so much more  Luckily I had 3rd party liability insurance :)

I also know people who hasn't and won't insure for 3rd party because they haven't the money. And it's a case off well they can't have what I haven't got.
I pay my bhs gold only for 3rd party and with me it's covering 5 horses which is a bloody bargain.
It makes me angry that people won't pay it and other people would have to lose out.

Agree with everyone above. 3rd party liability insurance is an absolute essential. It's unfortunate that it isn't a legal requirement but it should be. What's needed is a system put in place to ensure everyone has it, but I've no idea how it could be done. Even tying it in with passports would be a logistical nightmare.

It doesn't bear thinking about just how much damage one horse can do in a bad situation.

Yes stll liable for any damage or indeed Deaths the horse may cause (a horse going through a car windscreen is likely to kill driver/pasanger)

Thats what I thought....which is why OH's mare (who never leaves the yard)...is covered with the BHS.....wouldn't want to lose our house etc if anything happened and we could be held liable....

Our YO insisted last month on everyone having 3rd party liability and providing copies for him as a reccomendation from his insurance company!

No problem doing this, all ours are insured, but a few people got a bit stressy about it. I don't know why, I agree with everyone else who says you'd be barking mad not to, especially in this climate atm. However, no one has left. :)

Any claims arising from an accident her horse is involved in could run into millions, due to a decision in the House of Lords a horse keeper or owner is now liable for any injury or damage that his/her horse causes or does to other people regardless, whether s/he is negligent or not.(UK law)

She might find that she is already covered on her household policy anyway, but for the sake of about £50 she could join WHW or BHS, help other horses and protect herself at the same time.

I wouldn't even contemplate putting a horse in a field without 3rd party, never mind riding an unpredictable horse on the road.

This refers to the Mawhinney case were some horses escaped from a secure field despite several fences and gates and caused a serious injury to the driver and passenger of a car.

The outcome of this was that horse owners need to have third party public liability insurance to no less than £10,000,000 (Ten million pounds). Many insurance companies do not provide cover to this level so check your policy very carefully.

Well we looked into medical insurance for all ours following a large bill and when I saw the premium was only a few quid a month, I thought it was stupid NOT to have it at the price so we added liability as well.

Its something I have always insisted on anyone on our old yard having.
I just cant fathom why the insurance is such an issue for her, I certainly would rather pay £60 than potentially 10's of £1000's if one of mine caused an accident.
