I'm a bit of a newbie on the leggings front, years ago I did have a pair of kerrits with knee patches that I remember not getting on that well with but can't really remember why!

While doing some bargain shopping I bought a pair of these a while ago to try in summer and they haven't come out since then until our hack today 😂 (and they were cheap enough to have just to wear round the house 🤣). I'm unconvinced by the silicone dots + rubbing which does seem to be an issue others have. I am a bit of a prone to rubbing person.

What I'm not sure about is whether I'd have the same issue with just knee patch silicone or whether better to avoid it completely and get some non sticky ones. Not planning on doing anything too exciting in them so don't have to stick but one does buck and the other is welsh so is well sometimes extra welsh. Don't have silicone on anything else, only suedey stuff if full seat.

Your thoughts very much appreciated!

I have full silicone seat for hacking, not for schooling as they do glue you in 🤣. Like MM above my favourites are fake suede knee patch, I have three pairs of Mark Todd ones, six years old and still going strong, only downside is they don’t have a phone pocket.

I don't like any kind of sticky at all despite riding something that like to stick in the odd 180 spin.

I like the Equine Splendour leggings as they offer a non silicone option.

Dublin are the worst for the silicone dots rubbing off quickly.
If you want a really nice relaxed pair that the dots dont rub off it is these

Le mieux are very comfy but the thighs do rub off after a few months.

Gs equestrian silicone strips are great as well and very inexpensive.

I am a hacker though.

Pikeur are sticky and do a suede seat and those are really sticky and would be good for schooling.

I have about 6 pairs of just silicone knees and haven’t even worn them 😂

Maybe it is muscle-memory or something but I've been wearing suede seated jods for so long that I don't actually feel I can ride particularly well in anything else.
Don't know if it is true or not but have also heard that silicon seats do no favours to your saddle.

If you like suede seat and don't mind breeches, have a look at Dublin Shona breeches, I'm happy with mine and finding them comfortable.

Not all silicon is equal, some are stickier than others. I don't like the ones that are shiny and rubbery, too sticky, but now feel ones without are too slippery.

I have some Cavallo cavagrip ones which are perfect but was lucky to get them seriously discounted as too expensive for me otherwise.

I don't get on with suede, i find it too restrictive. I have some with stretchy suede but feel like i can't move so don't wear them much.

I like the ones with smooth silicone AFTER a few months of use. Prefer just knees to full seat.

I do use full seat plus gel seat saver for fun rides though, glues me to the saddle but it's hard to get off at the end!

I've got both and suede full seat I get on with all if them but my absolute favourite ones are the denim ones with silicone I've got Le mieux and cameo both are lovely, my denim suede seat ones are Horseware.

I’ve tried silicon and gone back to suede. The silicon marks my saddle (quite badly), stuck me to my car seat (which was funny) and rubbed (not so funny!). Most expensive experiment ever for me, and cost per wear eye-watering.
have tried leggings with no grip, but I think I’m too used to the suede, so they are now walking/running leggings.
I’m a bit fussy!

I couldn't cycle to the stables in full-seat silicon - not safe. Took the hint re: my riding too and now am knee-patch only (preferably fake leather or fake suede but will take silicon, if not option). Wish there were more knee-patch options tbh...

Thank you all for your thoughts, its really helpful! I don't actually own anything denim in normal clothing so not sure on that route. The only suede seated I have are my show breeches so I'm not massively attached to them as a feeling. My favourites are my very cheap plain Hy thick cotton jods which also have decent pockets 😂
Currently have some puffa lighterweight breeches but both are reaching end of life and were still too warm when it was hot last year.

I think my plan of action is to try current ones with my thinly padded cycling knickers, and also try a bog standard pair of leggings Im not too attached to and see how that feels (albeit inside seams)

I think with the kerrits it was partly that they felt slippy and I have some recollection of the suede knee patches bunching up a bit behind my knees so not being that comfortable so I tended to stick with thin cotton options but all of those are pretty dead now/beyond stitching up the crotch anymore 😂

I did a search on here and in fb group which threw up quite a lot of options but Im surprised how many of the recommended seem to have inside leg seams, I can't see that working out well for me even if flat stictched.

You may get on well with flexors then. They are comfy, but I prefer suede, so mine are now used for other exercises like cycling and walking.

I was going to suggest flexars if you don't want too sticky. Horzehoods are also doing different options of knees/ full seat etc for their leggings.

Re trying a bog standard pair of leggings, I found that some of the non horse ones were far more slippery than the flexars mentioned above so might not give you a true indication of what they're like to ride in.

I personally prefer the knee only silicon or flexars as I don't like anything too sticky and don't want to damage my saddle and I'm another that finds suede seats too restrictive.

Thanks for this thread! I thought I was the only one who doesnt get on with full seat grippy riding leggings/jods etc and thats all I can seem to find in the shops! I have one pair that are very comfy to walk around in and nice and lightweight for summer but deeply unpleasant to ride in (rubbing, bunching up etc). I daren't buy on-line as I can be tricky to fit (smallish waist but meaty of thigh so what fits one body part sometimes doesnt fit the other)! Good to know there are some options and Im not alone in not liking this particular trend! In fact my very keen horsey learner niece and I always have a very good-natured argument about full grip leggings - she loves hers and wont ride in anything else as one of the riding school ponies she rides is quite spooky and they have "saved her life" (direct quote!) a couple of times when riding him. I however tell her that riding in them is cheating!

Ive got ones which say "Horse Rider" down the leg, not entirely sure what make they are but they're off facebook. Got a lovely winter pair and a thinner version for summer. Super comfy tights, they have full silicone seat but they're not too sticky. I cant stand some really sticky bum ones, especially for jumping as I like to be able to move about in the saddle freely. Sticky knee ones are probably my preferred ones

These people I think but they're taking a break over the summer. I have several pairs of their balance tights.

I have some cotton type finish leggings- they look to be probably the same material as the flexars

Id seen the horzehoods recommended elsewhere but they all looked silicone on the website- I’ve just realised you can de select it when you select them doh 😅

Share ponies owner said she has the same issue but hers are pikeurs and I’d rather stay cheaper 😅

I personally love full seat gel type riding tights. I have Dublin and Winter Aubrion. They are less restrictive in the crotch to knee area than full faux suede breeches. I don’t find that I stick to the seat badly and as above the stickiness does die down after a few wears and washes. If I ever wear anything without it now it feels really slippery.

My favourite breeches are Rugged suede full seat, but they are a pain to get off (they have bizarrely narrow lower legs! The upper region is fine). I forgive them due to their comfort in the saddle, though. Shires Aubrion are great for full gel option, although the elastic goes before the silicone!

Was going to suggest Astiles no silicone self seated cotton stretch jodhs at under £20 a pop, I live in them and have done for years. Belt loops, zip key fob pocket plus I have my phone in a holster.

But aargh website seems to be down, I hope they haven't ceased trading. I hate anything sticky bum with a vengeance.

Unfortunately I did end up with a friction rash/spots after my hack but will get washing them for sure :), my bike undershorts will also cover the area affected so will try with them (once it's warm enough again)!

I think it was just sooo hot here last year that even though due to the ground we were pretty much only hacking in walk I did really want something even cooler than my thin cotton breech options. I was making full use of my mesh half chaps 😂

I really rate the Blackfort Equestrian leggings - the silicone bits are very low profile and understated as I also don’t like to be stuck to the saddle and used to love thick cotton jodhs! The leggings are super comfy and mine have washed and worn really well.

The first time I rode in my new Arita silicone seated Jodhs, they rubbed a circular patch on my saddle seat. Very annoyed as it was also a new to me saddle. I have since purchased a furry seat saver to prevent any more damage to my saddle.

Yikes!
Glad I haven't experimented with silicon seats
After all the angst and money spent to get the right saddle, certainly don't want it ruined

Yes in hot weather the silicone seat can mark the saddle.
I've fallen off loads of times despite sticky bum so don't really rate them anyway.
I use John Whitaker cheapy breeches, I'd prefer them to be high rise to go over my spare tyre but otherwise they do the job fine. No silicone in them.
