Hi - has anyone had a horse with a leg injury that has always been slightly different after recovery?

My boy tweaked his check lig and it is now always marginally warmer than the others. It does not worry me too much, but it is slightly different.

(sorry - this is also in New Lounge)

Mine tore her deep flexor tendon two years ago. She was always a short-strider but is now also cautious with it. Sound (level) but careful. She will only ever be used to hack now though so it's not too much of an issue

thanks - how bad was your pony's injury? what treatment did you have?

My boy had shockwave therapy... which i think is great.
there is no lump on my boy's leg.... just this really slight temp change.

Wasn't that bad, he'd had the lump for a while but wasn't lame so the farrier (who I would trust with all horsey leg/foot queries) told me to ride him lightly and cold hose it. Then he went lame while I was on holiday in August - a friend was riding him for me and I think she overdid it

He was on Danilon for a week, strict box rest for 6 weeks with gamgee and bandages on at night and cold hosing twice a day; not good as he's half TB and was climbing the walls! Was supposed to walk him in hand but he kept trying to squash me - even when I led him in a chifney - so I got told to sedate him and chuck him out.

After that it was just turnout in a small paddock, a little free schooling, vet came back and told me to start riding him (this was in about November). Still cold hosing the leg after exercise to keep the lump down, but I think it's there to stay!

How and when did yours tweak his?

pratting about in the field with his mates! typical....

i had evented him all summer and he was having a 2 week break when he did it.

he injured himself on 23rd September last year and he has been back in ridden work now for just over 4 months. he is starting to jump x poles at the weekend... i am gradually building him up.

Same story as mine ...

Was v annoyed as I'd been doing lots of work with him over the summer, was trying to get him fit to hunt during the winter, so I had to shelve that plan for another year! He was in the best shape of his life

and I'm almost convinced he did it on purpose!

Does it look/feel the same or are there differences?

It certainly doesn't look any different because the tear is right at the bottom of her hoof, under the navicular bone. If she is feeling sensitive on it she'll stand taking the weight off the heel - takes a trained eye to spot it (or a paranoid owner!)
It has in the past been the one heel to get hot first. If she gallops around the field like a loon, she might come in with very minimal heat just in the left (bad) heel or it may be both hot but left slightly more. This has got better in the last six months whilst I've been riding her - if her heels are hot they are normally the same temperature.
All these are very, very marginal differences. I am probably paranoid as I said, but I was the only one on my yard to notice that she had tweaked it a couple of months ago as I brought her in and she wasn't standing right. She was sound trotted up but just not quite right in my mind. Two weeks off and she was standing fine again.
