The last week or two my mares legs are filling while at grass. She is also suffering from very large grass glands. This morning the swelling has spread up to the hock. i cold hosed and walked in hand this morning. Has anyone else experienced this?

Not as such but my horse has now got pastern dermatitis - aka mud rash, in the driest August for years! One filled leg and several scabby bits - hoping my vet will let me have some Flamazine without a visit

It's dermatitis - a bacteria has got in somehow, helped by mud but not essential. How is your mare? Has anything changed about her diet - new field, more grass etc. A bran mash with Epsom salts is an old remedy, to flush her system.

Gosh how odd to get mud fever this time of the year. Wishing your horse a speedy recovery.

It won't be mud rash, here is my lad. This is LV and an utter nightmare.

Thanks Tyssandi, I had my trimmer look at her but didn't think it was lami but have however put her back on very sparse grazing. Plus being barefoot she's not at all footy. Ah yes AdorableAlice my friends horse suffers the same, isn't it related to sun exposure too?

In part sun exposure is a problem, it is also an immune system issue, cushings and liver disease is also possible with some horses.

When my mare went onto her winter grazing, her legs all got super puffy. All of the horses legs did, its not a response to overly rich grass is it? Thats what happened here because the farmer had fertilised the grass about six months prior.

If there is no sign of photosensitivity/sunburn on the legs, it could be due to too much protein. Cut all hard feed and restrict grass intake. Make up the forage amount with good quality old hay or soaked hay.

As Faracat says could be too much protein. My youngster is very sensitive, thankfully haven't had a problem with grass but at times has had a issue with the haylage and if he needs a hard feed for a bit of bute for whatever reason it's really tricky. (our yard owner makes all our haylage and is included in the livery, but it's not always consistently the same!) After a day or so off of said feed his legs are back to normal. I've also found he can't have carrots as they make his hind legs balloon!
So far I've found that the cheap cherry flavoured chaff is just right for him and he has no reaction.

Thank you,the first thing I did was remove her from the grass back to her limited paddock.legs are better today, her grass glands have come down too.
