My Welsh D's legs have been filling up (all 4) for the last week. I first thought it was because he had started to come in, he'd previoulsy been out at night and in for 6 hours in the day all summer, as they did go down after exercise. However, on Sunday morning his off fore was a tree trunk

hot and sore to the touch. And his near fore very swollen too. His hinds were/are also filled. Last winter he was in 24/7 and absolutely fine. He's only 5, and in Medium work.

So any ideas? Is it time for the vet?

My cobs legs fill up overnight and then go down as soon as he is turned out. From what Ive read its a circulation thing. I have my boy on Cleaver and Marigold from Hiltons herbs which does seem to help a little but they still swell over night a little when stabled. Bandaging may help too.

But if you are concerned its getting worse it may be best just to check with the vet that is is not a bout of Lymphangitis or infection. Is he lame?

Claire - I've just posted a similar enquiry on behalf of my friend whose horse has suffered from feather mites for years. Since my friend has owned the horse (2 years approx), she has tried and tried to get on top of the mite infestation but the skin damage underneath is terrible. On top of all this, the mare's legs have now begun to swell and she is on antibiotics for the secondary infection that has invaded the dreadfully damaged, thickened and scarred skin. Skin swabs have been taken and the vets are currently querying a condition called Chronic Progressive Lymphoedema. One of the symptoms of this progressive condition is grossly swollen and mis-shaped legs. If I were you I'd get the vet out pronto.

Fore elgs are less associated with Lymphangitis than hind legs but can be affected. How lame is the horse? this is a big indicator. If the horse is crippled then it is likly to me an infection. Maybe Lymphangitis, Maybe mud fever.

The fact you say the horses legs are hot and sore indicates an infection. Keep us posted.

I rode him on Sat, just took him for a plod along the road, and had a little trot and he was absolutely fine, completely sound. Sunday (day his legs were huge) I didn't ride him, but he went out for 7 hours, which didn't make them any better. So he hasn't been lame, he's just very sore on them.

Just had farrier and they said it look like infection to them, but didn't really know. Anyway vet should be here soon.

If you get diagnosed with Lyphangitis then I highly recommend Game Ready Equine, saw an old horse who had a really bad case get cleared in 10 days and the vet estimated 2-3weeks, great bit of gear if you can afford it
