She does get mud fever no matter what i do. I am giving her a full clip @ the weekend but unsure about the legs.... leave them or clip it all off?

Thoughts??? What are you all doing??

Our little dude was done yesterday, he's had a high chaser with half face and legs left in, can't stand the thought of his wee nose and leggies being cold lol
 
I always leave on, never seen the point in taking them off tbh, it isn't like they sweat is it!

re. the mud fever, have you tried taking the 'don't wash off mud' route? The hose never goes near my mares legs through the winter and dried mud is only ever gently brushed off if essential and not a sniff of mud fever - and she is a grey with pink bits! Those on the yard who religiously hose off and only put to bed immaculate horses tend to be plagued with it!
 
My horse has never had mud fever when I have clipped his legs. The years I didn't clip them, he had it every time. Maybe just coincidence but I would always rather clip :)

ah, nightmare! I never clip or wash and don't get it (though, through show season when she has a bath before each outing, even though I am careful to wipe over her legs with a towel she always gets grotty flakey bits!) Maybe I just have an oddment!
 
I'd leave on tbh, unless your showing I don't see the point.

I also do the no wash muddy legs thing, but then I ride in the mornings straight out of the box so just brush the dry mud off.

My horse is a redhead with very sensitive skin (I sympathise as I am too!) and reacts to all the anti mud fever products I have tried. I will either leave his legs to dry and brush mud off or hose them (cold water, no shampoo) and put his thermatex wraps on overnight. It works for him but then he is a bit 'special' ;) :D
 
i leave on = and i also allow feathers to grow back after the last event of the year to protect legs
i also hardly ever wash her legs - and when i do i use a tiny amount of everyday soap so as not to strip the natural oil - she lives out 24/7 too so i never wash legs off - if its dry i brush - if its wet she gets ridden as is

ETA - she's had 3 baths this year.... all with a really mild shampoo - and 2 white socks washes in between - that's it! and i'd rather do less than that but brown sweat at a comp is not a v fetching look pmsl!
 
I like to take the legs off - clipped legs dry far quicker than even slightly hairy legs, and it's easier to see the start of anything nasty happening.

shes incredibly hairy and also has feathers as shes part coblet too!!! :)
