Thanks everyone for your advice this morning.
Took battery back to well known retailer. Who tested it, reported that yes, it was faulty and the proceeded to refuse to exchange.
After quoting Sale of Goods Act, they still refused - because someone had pulled a fast one on them this morning, exchanging a battery he hadn't bought. Not my fault, I explained....
Anyway, after much arguing I produced my bank statement to show i'd spent the appropriate amount in there in Dec and they finally gave me a new battery.
Oh, and the ramp works
So am off for a lesson in the morning.
