Hi all, query as title really, my new boy ( not in the pic) is a very hot horse who can suffer with a sweat related rash - last year he had not really been started but this year we are cracking on and I can foresee that this may be an issue. Do the above pads really keep a horse’s back cooler? I like Lemieux because the shape, especially over the wither, fits him really well - however, if anyone knows of a saddle cloth other than these which they feel actually does make a difference I would look at that as well? Thanks!
 
I only really use the mesh air pads these days! They’re good but don’t keep the horse 100% dry and they do tend to hold onto wetness.
Mark Todd did/do a much thinner mesh numnah which works better for keeping the horse dry and removing sweat. Alternatively Husk and Ecogold also get good reviews, though the latter is not cheap.

Hi both, thanks loads for your prompt replies - will have a look at both Husk and Ecogold as well. Was hoping someone would have had a good experience with Lemieux simply because they fit my boy's shape well - am not normally into 'labels' but started with Lemieux as I got a reduced one (?) and do appreciate the construction etc. - however, will have a look at anything that truly works.
 
Hi Ester, the original version of ??? And your Ecogold - do you think it really does wick away moisture and keep the back cooler ( insofar as it can when you are covering the back with a cloth and a leather saddle)?
 
I’m a huge fan of husk products, I mainly use their bandages and bandage pads on my horses for schooling but their boots are also great. Their legs stay so cool and are never sweaty even in the warmest weather, however I do have one of their saddle cloths and my horse does get sweaty underneath it. I still love it but she does get hot underneath it (as she does with every other saddle cloth she has.)
 
Thanks for that, Mojo-dtxo, it's really useful to have a practical review of something, especially when it is a pretty big financial layout. ?
 
I'm also a Lemieux fan but didn't pull the trigger on the Mesh saddle pad yet. I do have a Weatherbeeta and Woof Wear pad with D-ring attachements that also work on my guy. They are more of a cotton pad and not so thick, so I think they're good summer pads. Usually cost less too. So if they fade in the sun and get sweaty regularly, I'm not so offended.

Just had a glimpse at the Husk site, I did not know about them, and that was a good thing! Now I see several things that I must have! ?
 
original of the lemieux, they have changed it since. (I suspect because I wasnt the only person having issues withe the foam on the back section bunching up (they replaced it).

Frank was very hot and sweaty beast! The lemieux was better for not rubbing with the bamboo lining so I used it at coat change times, the ecogold in high summer ;). Kerilli still gets batches in from ecogold I think from the US.
 
Does anyone have this one - 'LEMIEUX Wither Relief Mesh Jumping Square' - and if so, how is this in terms of heat/sweat?
 
Just found the Carbon Mesh Dressage pad on the Lemieux site reduced in Anthracite so am going to try that first. Not being a cheapskate, but I know the cut suits him so will try this before looking at the ones that are upwards of £150. Thanks for everyone's help and I promise I'm not just ignoring it but the fit being right is also important as he is a very big boy! And the outlay for the reduced one (more than 33% off) which I know fits his shape makes it worthwhile trying first.....

The material and thought process behind Husk are great however the execution in terms of fit is sadly a bit off.

The dressage pads are huge, and the jump pads are a very odd shape.

You can probably just about get away with it if your horse is wide across the back or at least a decent size or you use a standard girth on a jump saddle but I found that my short girth was constantly catching the bottom of the pads causing them to ripple up - which is irritating from a potential rub point of view and also causing an unnecessary bump under the leg.

As a result I have just sold all my pads and will stick with Premier Equine or Le Mieux from now on as I just find the fit better.

I have however kept the Husk bandages and pads which are really good

I should say that my horse is 15.3/16 ISH so not a tiny pony!!
 
I should that given that my ecogold was made to go with jump saddles I did have to move the girth tabs to go on my VSD saddle so the girth could be more forwards but it worked pretty well. - It is one of the items I haven't sold!

Thanks, Rextherobber, I did see those so will remember your recommendation - I was lucky to get a bargain Lemieux one yesterday on their site for almost the same price as the Shires, and i do know the fit will be right so will see how this works first. ?
