My lovely Lemieux sheeps wool numnah used to be sooo soft......... now (2 years later) it has gone lumpy underneath, the wool seems to have gone into clumps :( I dont wash it that often, and always use the wool stuff, but the clumps remain. I fear it must be getting uncomfortable for my horse.
Any ideas on how to make it soft again? I have tried brushing, and combing, but still lumpy....

Ive got Lemieux half wool lined saddlecloths and other makes too but after washing whilst its still damp I always rub my fingers back and forths through the wool pile so it doesnt clump up. Not sure if that will work with yours now but thought worth a try? Ive never used the wool wash with any of mine, I just use normal detergant and wash at 30 degrees.,

Human hair conditioner! And lots of it. Even if your wool has clumped together a good dose of conditioner can go a long way to rescuing it!

Before you wash it, just spread conditioner all over the wool, give it a good rub to get it down into the fibres. I then just pop it in the washing machine on a normal / cool wash (30 / 40 C), no detergent. Then leave to dry naturally - not near a heat source.

I got a 2nd hand sheepskin girth cover that had been washed without conditioner and a good coating of conditioner improved it no end :)

If it is not washed often then it may not be the wool clumping together, it may be horse hair making bobbles. I have had most success going through the lumps by hand, splitting each clump in half then half again. once they are very small I use a hairbrush to restore smooth surface.

Never wash it! Only brush it with human cushioned hair brush for curly hair. Do it regular. Mine's never ever been washed, I only ever brush it vigorously and yes it's a bit less "white" but still just as smooth and fluffy. Add some lanolin if you do wash it as that's what keeps the "bounce" and shock absorption. Brush ladies! Brush brush brush! :D

I will try all methods- thanks guys. They only one I'm not sure of is the 'never wash it'.... I have to when it gets really gunky with congealed sweat.

No way could I not wash mine after hunting or something it is dripping and stinks! Goes straight in wash, it always comes out clumpy even with hair condt on it but after brushing its fine. Use my dog's brush or a metal teeth sweat scraper back and forth to fluff it
