Lend trailer to total strangers?

It appears I have lost a new boarder before they even arrived!

People came to look at the yard at the weekend, said they wanted to come and then asked if I'd lend them my trailer to collect the horse. Just hitch a trailer to a strangers vehicle and let them drive off! Would you?

I said that we'd charge $50 gas, for a 60 mile round trip and 2-3 hours of our time to collect, that's cheap, so I have just had a very rude email telling me I am money grabbing and to get stuffed!

No way would I. You also have the question of insurance. What if they didn't have insurance for their towing vehicle and were to have an accident involving your trailer as they were towing? They may not have MOT or tax on their car, or may not have even passed their test! These things are not unusual.

I wouldn't lend anyone my trailer unless I was towing it and even then I would be extremely cautious about this.

No way, you really can't be too careful! From what you've said it sounds like they might have been thieving so and so's. (we're not allowed to say the word on the forum).

It sounds like a classic scam, and they were either going to disappear, never to be seen again with your trailer, or, when you didn't let them use that as the excuse. Either way they don't sound like genuine liveries.

I used old YO lorry to pick my mare up but was at yard a while before hand with loan pony so guess thats different. I let friends only use my trailer but wouldnt let a stranger!
