Hi All

Has anyone ever been to the Leominster monthly horse sales? What was your experience? What was the quality of stock/premises like and on the whole were there very many purchasers there?

Thanks in advance for your comments!:)

I go to Leominster quite a bit. It is a good sale, no really sad sights and probably lots of bargains to be had if you know what you are looking for.The majority are warranted and you can get them vetted on site. Its well run and the sale ring is inside. It is usually pretty busy (except around xmas).
The cafe is good too!!

Not been to the Leominster sales, but been to the Brightwells sales at Malvern. My sister got her BSJA 148 pony from there, We still have her as she's so good my sis kept her to jump in seniors, and my last horse came from there. It's a great opportunity to see a large number of horses all at once.
In my experience don't believe a word the owners tell you, or at least take it with a pinch of salt. My boy they said was fine despite his roaring and they hunted etc and he could barely cope with walking uphill, that said he had fantastic manners and after a tie-back operation was a total sweetie and I kept him for 3 years before deciding that he just didn't want to be a showjumper and he's now doing fun stuff and a bit of endurance.
Get the horse vetted if you can, and be prepared for the worst if they do find anything (the roaring did come up in my horse's vetting, but we decided that for the price and including the price of potential operation he was worth it, when we got him home and hacked him out it was immediately obvious that he couldn't work without having the operation)
Definitely ride the horse if you get the opportunity and get there early as you really get a chance to see how the horse behave as they arrive and the first time they go into the big arena. I've seen a lot of horses throw a fit when they 1st get there, and tried some horses that say they area amazing, but won't even jump a 2' fence.
So yes it can be a great opportunity to get a nice horse for a good price, but approach with caution! :)
Hope that is of some help, sorry it's a bit long

I've been a few times and my horse was brought from there. My old YO brought them to bring on and sell. That was the plan with mine 5 years ago, a project but he now has a home for life with me. It is a well run sale but as above arrive early to have a good look and go with an open mind. Look at what the horse could look like in a few months time as some are underdone. You can get a 2 stage vetting done there as well which I recommend. :)

Agree with dotty1. If you have a search round the Brightwells website you can find perivous catalogs with what the horses sold for too.

Completely agree. Trial facilities aren't great but you are able to try any lot you are interested in, with the sellers permission of course.

hi im thinking of going there do you get to try the horse if its brocken ?? or is it just a guessing game?

Yes if the seller agrees to let you ride (cant see why they wouldn't if you were suitable for the horse), as already mentioned already trial fusilitlys arnt great, there is a small grass area with a jump and also a concreat area that you can try them on. Remember to wear boots and take your hat or else brightwells wont let you ride though.
