Maybe it’s because it’s summer but I’ve looked back a while and still see less demand for livery lately. There are multiple yards with multiple spaces (normally waiting list type yards) and despite some yards closing the surrounding yards still have spaces. Where have all the horses gone?

There is a beautiful yard not too far from me. Any spaces are usually snapped up. This time they have been adverfor nearly 2 months. Its unheard of!

Well I don't know about anything in other parts of the country, but going from when I started over 30yrs ago now where you could hardly give livery away; I was positively besieged the last time I advertised a livery. I'm a private DIY yard, Devon. And because I also live on-site I'm bloomin' picky who I have.

I’m across the pond. Maybe everyone’s moved to England!
I think livery here in NI is a strange thing anyway. Most people don't want something permanent, they just need it in the wet (!) months and can generally find a corner of ground to stick the horse in over summer. And they don't like paying either. I've heard some rude comments lately about farriers daring to put their prices up to £90/set!! 😱😱 goodness.

Yes we don’t like paying for things here and everyone thinks a field should be a fiver a week lol

Personally I’m enjoying the peace and quiet of the yard but I also acknowledge the business side and we need some liveries in. But no one seems to be looking.

I recently advertised 3 grass party livery spaces at mine, simple setup but nice, with arena and decent hacking and guaranteed turnout. Only one person has come. People have only asked for diy which I won’t do.

I’ve been on a waiting list for 10 months for a second box at my yard. Starting to think I need to move house to find somewhere!

When I moved Homey to this yard in 2014 it was full and he had to overnight in the middle of the horse walker for two weeks waiting for a stable to be free. They took him as I was on a yard where there was a death from sycamore poisoning and wanted a quick exit and he had been on the yard as a rehab patient for 6 months the year before when he had a broken splint bone. There were 13 horses in the geldings fields now there are only 6. Mares field however is full with waiting list.

I think a lot of people want individual turnout or 24/7 in the summer which we don't have. We do have all year turnout and plenty of grass. Bert shares his field with 5 huge sports horses. Most of whom need loads of grass so expected he will be muzzled all the time.

Around here any spaces are like hens teeth. Spaces on decent yards (ie sufficient turnout and hacking) even rarer and I’ve been looking for months for 2 spaces DIY livery locally as current yard is closing and had no luck. I reserved one space for 3 months but am now having to move further away on part-livery as I can’t find anything else locally even on two separate yards and I want the horses to be settled before winter comes around again. I’ll be living on beans on toast for the foreseeable.
