I like the fancy dress races (where you race up jump off get dressed, throw yourself back on and race back) but that is mainly just because I find it funny!
Also what about pin the label on the pony? Get a pony shape/poster at one end of the ring and a bucket with names of points of the horse in it, go to the bucket jump of get a label, jump on go up to the pony shape and stick it in the right place. This is good because it can be adapted to what every theory you want them to learn, ie. label the feeds etc.
Divide into teams of four, split into pairs, two people share a horse. one rides down a line of poles (weaving in and out) and takes the saddle off at the other end, then they hop back on and ride bareback back to their partner. while they are swapping over the next horse in the team goes (fully tacked) and does the same. When they return the 1st horse goes back bareback with the rider, weaving in and out, and at the other end they put the sadde on and ride back.
Each pair does it twice each, fastest group wins. With more able riders they can canter/trot bareback, or stick with walk.
Hmmm...hope that makes sense!
Educational game......one white/grey pony, lots of waterbased/child and pony friendly paint and brushes. They can outline muscles, bones, organs and have a big bath at the end!
Theory
- Name That Tack (bring out ten different items of tack including boots, martingales, a double bridle, bits, etc. and get them to see if they can name them all)
- Illness and injury (who knows where to find the pulse on a horse? Who knows how many beats per minute? How many breaths per minute? What are the signs of colic? How can you spot lameness? etc. etc. with rosettes for the theory champ)
Practice
- Who can dismount, unsaddle, saddle back up and remount the fastest (but with points for correctness)
- Who can demonstrate an exercise to help make your legs supple? (Scissor kicking, pulling foot up to back of thich etc.)
- Who can demonstrate an exercise to help make your arms supple? (arm-windmilling, stretching figertips to ponies' ears and tail)
- I also think the water-based paint/anatomy one sounds fantastic
Plain silly fun
- Egg and spoon weave between poles (first back wins, be prepared to spend lots of time fetching eggs off the ground)
- Race to top, dismount, grab a glove/sock whatever off the ground, remount, race back, throw sock/glove/whatever in bucket halfway down (if they miss, must get off and put it in correctly), first home wins
- Race to top, dismount, blow up a balloon, tie knot in it, remount without bursting it, race back with balloon in one hand, and hand balloon to you. Winner for both biggest balloon and also for first back
- Laundry-race - riders each have three socks/shirts/numnahs/whatever at the bottom with them, must grab one, ride to the top, and from horseback throw it over a fence/hook it on a pole/whatever, race back, grab another, run to top, and so on until first to complete wins, but if laundry falls to ground, must go back and correct
- Can do the same with spelling games with three or four cans/blocks apiece with writing on them (PONY or whatever) that they have to take in order, stack on a table/upturned dustbin either from horseback or the ground and the first to complete (but must spell it right!) wins
Can I come along? I think I really want to play too!
