Had a lesson on Blue last night from a lady who keeps her horses up the road from us, she's training to be an instructor and is a dressage judge.

She showed me a completely different way to ride Blue to get him round and working properly from behind, (after quick warm up) started with lots of walk and got him to take the rein down and started to try to get him to bend to the inside a little on a small circle, and then progressed to the same in trot. She taught me to ride him with a very light long contact so he had to learn to carry himself....?

My previous instructors way of teaching was very different to this! I think i got more out of Blue last night than i have done for a while, just wonder if i can do it again without anyone helping me on the ground?!

Wish i had got some pictures cos he felt like he was going really nicely!

Weird though how the way she taught was completely different to R's teaching?

Also she said with regard to Blue's jumping - to put up a few cross poles and practice just cantering in a rhythm and not worrying bout striding and take off points and letting him work it out for himself... she also said to do this when i take him jumping on Sunday? Going to be so hard to do this! But will it work?

My instructor makes me do that jumping.

Key is to get a good enough canter and set the horse up way before you turn for the jump. Once the canter is active and coming through from behind (your job) then it is up to him to judge where to take off and adjust his last canter strides accordingly (his job)!

Its much better than fretting over strides but mine is well aware he can jump from anywhere as necessary and make it to the other side! Needs to learn to think more than 1 stride out!

Glad you had a good lesson and found someone who suits you
