My mare used to be a pain in the bum to worm but I found a technique that eventually made her give up. I'd hide the wormer and go up to her being all lovely, stroking her face and her nose, stand next to her facing forwards and with my left hand stick a finger into the left side of her mouth (like you do when they won't open their mouth for the bit) so going under her head. Then very quickly bring the wormer out, timing it just right so that they are opening their mouth trying to get rid of your finger and shove it in. They throw their head up to get away but if you're quick enough to have squirted it all in then you can use this to your advantage as they will already have their head up with no opportunity to spit it in your face. Be careful not to get too excited and end up jabbing them in the face with the syringe, they don't appreciate it. Takes a bit of practice, I had plenty having to give sedalin to horses at work who didn't want to go sleepy!
