Lesson report for today - cantering, bruises and wandering feet.

Awww i remember the good old days of lessons, was very fun :D
I remember the first time i went bear back (sp) lol on a wee 13.2 cobby pony which i was way to big for :p well i was just troting round a corner and i was laughing so much i toppled off the side lmao it was very funny

Thats what I was doing yesterday, both me and my instructor were just laughing her head off as I bobbled round the school :D

Bareback is so much fun! Only I think id slip off even more...

Hmm, I thought Id recapture my pony riding days by riding my horse up to her field bareback and in a headcollar, all very well till my friend slapped her on the rear end - her wither is a bit prominent for cantering sideways :)

Ahm,you know I want a pm :p

Personaly,I would keep up the no stirrup work on Dawi. If he has the most bounce and you learn to sit to him well, every other horse you get on will be easy and you will be able to cope with bounce monsters.

Erm... Eek!!

Maybe what helped you stay on though....:D:cool:

It was my ever-so-slightly-sadistic instructor that got me to go BAREBACK on DAWI!

I was in so much pain after that. Withers like knives + unreal bounciness = OUCHIES!

you know when you canter and you absorb the movement through your hips and pelvis? It's the same for trotting w/o stirrups and sitting trot (same thing lol).

Easiest way is to get a gym ball and practice sitting and rocking back and forth, learning to totally relax and loosen your hips and pelvis. Loosen being the operative word. It will come with practice. Honest :D

I have to do it when I ride ponies, because it's easier for me to sit to their trot than rise, and therefore I go w/o stirrups (I find that easier too) which invariably leads to me having a good canter blast w/o stirrups.... and a bruised bum the next day.

Just don't do what Mini T-Girl does and squeal "oooooohhhhh pony stop!! oooohhhh thats bumpy!" at the top of your voice... ;)

If i try to think about relaxing my legs and letting them go long I get more tense, especialy if I am 'jamming' my heels down. Two exercises I have found quite good are as follows. 1 - Imagine yourlegs are realy long and you are dragging the soles of your feet along the ground. 2 - Imagine you are trying to touch the soles of your feet together under the horses belly, that realy stops you gripping with your knees. Abover all keep it up. I am returning from riding after a break, I have got trot w/o stirrups ok, can do canter, but still having big probs during the transition!

It'll be on its way soon!

Ach, I will try... if my legs dont drop of first!! xx

I am definitely going to get myself a big pink sparkly gym ball now!

I was just laughing my head off, let alone squeaking! :D :D

Thanks for the tips, shall put them into practise this weekend :) x

WELL DONE TG! :D I remember the good ol' days where cantering without stirrups was real scary stuff but its the best feeling ever once you've conquered it so big, big well done to you!

Walk and canter without stirrups are so so much easier than trot and depending what horse I'm on, I still find it bouncy and time consuming to get used to the feel of the horse underneath me and I've been riding for 14 years so don't worry about it as it will come with time! :)

Imagine that your body is an ice-cream that is melting and the drips (Your legs) are dribbling down the cone (The sides of the horse) to help keep them in place. Imagine how the ice cream is - on the sides of the cone all the time and its dribbling, indicating relaxation in your legs. (I give you full permission to have an ice-cream if you manage this on a bouncy horse haha! :D) This way, with your legs hopefully in the right place and relaxed, you'll be able to concentrate on keeping your heels down and making sure you keep breathing lol! Always keep your shoulders back and sit up - never slouch forward but you knew that anyway lol! :D

Wish I could sympathize with the sports bra thing - my boobs aren't even worth mentioning lol. :(

Thanks :)

It was SUCH a great feeling! I did four canters, two on each rein, and was so so chuffed with myself and poor forgiving Dawi :D Apparently my instructor got it on video too

Erm... I shall try that! *dripdripdrip* :D xx

Re: Boobalage... Went to bravissimo today and got myself a super duper boob strapper downer, there will be NO BOUNCE!

^ Let me know if it works :). Its quite a strange idea but it worked for me. :)

A lunge lesson will probably do wonders too as you won't have to worry about steering or keeping the horse going, only working on your position. :) Good luck! :) x

Just to give an update, rather than start a whole new thread...

Have booked myself a 45min private for thursday! Have asked for a nice non-bouncy pony called Albert (aka Albie the fatty cob!) and for my usual instructor B.

Here's to better riding! *raises glass of fizzy pop*
