Fresh AS (again.... anyone seeing a theme here!) but worked his socks off.

Discussed the good, bad and ugly from my show and agreed that realistically I need a longer warm up. 40 mins isn’t enough by the time I’ve settled the walk and he just is a very goey type, so an hour from now on. Calum also made the very valid point that if he does anything that I wouldn’t laugh at if he was a 17hh 4yo stallion... I need to stamp on it just as hard.... rather than giggle at him!

Worked the LY in the walk to get him to accept my leg and then mainly on the canter transition and the canter gears... which was perfect as it’s just the areas we need to focus on atm.

I need to make sure I have the feeling he’s 100% in front of my inside leg in the trot, before I ask for canter with my outside leg.... to stop him either sucking back or falling flat.
Equally I need to make sure I’m containing the contact and not allowing the run.

Once in the canter again he MUST always respond to the inside leg by stepping under and forward to the hand and we had some entertaining acrobatics reminding him of this (but must keep hand and leg ON and imagine him 17hh... not too much giggling allowed !!)

Used the canter/trot/canter across the diagonal to test that he is in front of me and allowing me to set up and ride the transition... if he isn’t then he squiggles and wiggles off line and isn’t 1 stride sharp off the canter aid- will be adding this to my warm up repertoire as it’s a good indicator of my canter being ring ready.

Finished up with one long side of fancy trot and everyone was super happy with his effort... he really is an absolute dude I couldn’t ask for him to try any harder bless him.calum1.JPGcalum2.JPGcalum3.JPGcalum4.JPGcalum5.JPG

Looking absolutely fabulous as usual. Stunning pony!! Can I ask for a brief outline of your warmup. I'm finding my lad needs extra time now. Also my lady is shooting off in the canter transition. Unfortunately he shot off once, caught me by surprise and now he thinks I'm going to jab him in the mouth everytime poor lad. Any ideas?

so, in walk i normally use SI, LY or big walk pirouettes to get him accepting my leg before moving on to stretching down in the walk.

in trot it depends on how he's feeling, if hes pretty chilled and waiting then again some shallow SI and trot/walk/trot transitions, and then allowing some stretching in a steady trot.....if hes rushing off the leg then transitions just buzz him further so ride big squares in trot making sure i can can get my leg on, and spirals, and then the stretching.

re the canter i would ride it out a LY to help the softness so you feel you can allow with the hand more :)

Thank you will give it a try. It's spoiling our tests at the minute and I need to get it sorted!! Thanks for warm up plan x

He’s so lovely and every time I see a picture of him I really start to fancy getting my own mini Welsh 😂
