I had a wonderful, if rather tiring, lesson with Serena Pincus today. Serena is an AMAZING trainer, she misses nothing, doesn't have any short cuts or gimicks, but has the ability to see, diagnose and help solve problems brilliantly. I've trained with her and David for a while, but this is only the second time she's taught me on Oskar.

The biggest part of the lesson was simply working on correct responses to my aids - so trot/halt/trot transitions, on the bit, with an active hind leg, straight and correct. Canter/walk/canter, same thing. We did steep leg yields with the face to the wall, really stepping sideways away from the leg. With Oskar the challenge is keeping the steps small but active as he likes to run when the work gets hard. She told me off for letting him go "long and low" when the work got hard - he should be on the bit when I want him on the bit!!!

So by the end we were both rather sweaty but happy! Oskar was really swinging, and Serena made me realise that I've been letting him get away with being 95% straight and 95% through, when he should be 100% every time. That's the discipline that I need to find. I wish I had a Serena in the school every time I ride

Try and "hear" her words every time you ride - I do this with my trainer's words - if it is not 100% brilliant, I do it again. Repetition is the key with horses because they are habit animals!

Sounds like a fab lesson though! Did you get any pics?

Sounds Fabby.
Osk and you both looked shattered lol but what a great lesson

YOU will get those scores you so deserve and be very hard to beat soon.

i am in the Serena fan club too- i lived and trained at Sheepcote for a year and used to go back with my eventer when i had a 'proper' horse to ride.
she is a truly amazing trainer, without saying a lot she can get me riding on a totally different level every time.

Thanks! Serena is ace

. Osk was a tired boy, there was quite a bit of flattened poo in the stable this morning LOL. He'll have an easy hack today after getting new feet
