Well... This week I've ridden four times! This may seem teeny to you horse-owners and loaners out there, but for little ol' me, its been VERY good excercise :o

Wednesday was a mixed day.

In the morning I had a jump lesson with Bonnie, and L was teaching me. All in all we did ok, however I was really struggling to get a good secure fold over the jumps. I felt frustrated to say the least, but it did improve over the lesson. Towards the end, I cantered into a good-sized cross pole, became unbalanced, went forward and came off :o Landed on my feet, onto my knees, then onto bum/back/head. I sat on the sand a bit dazed as Bonnie stood there despairing at her hopeless rider and my instructor came to rescue me :o Ah well... Only one more fall away from being a real rider! :p

Wednesday afternoon brought a half-hour private lesson as a thankyou for helping out on pony days over the past few weeks. I was so grateful to the YM! Saw I was on Dawi, the big blonde Section D () and was going to be taught by the new instructor S. That was one amazing lesson! S was lovely, really encouraging, and by just telling me a few little things I was doing wrong, (leg too far forward) once I'd sorted it out Dawi went wonderfully! We had some lovely canters, even managing to steer quite well :D Also lots of transitions, which really helped get him listening and thinking about what he was doing. Overall, I did feel apprehensive at first but I really learnt a lot, and even S said she didnt normally like teaching with him, but he was ace this time! :D

Today has also been a mixed day, ending with me feeling happy but also quite sorry for myself :(:o

The morning's lesson, saw that I was riding Pally! A very pretty Palomino mare, I hadn't ridden her before and had heard she was speedy, I did feel nervous! However I soon saw how FAB she was! Our usual instructor was away and only had one other person in the group, so rode for 45mins with L teaching us. I found her to be very comfy and responsive, and had my first canters in jumping position!

However... My back started to play up for some reason. (I have a feeling I may have twinged my back yesterday, lifting hay bales at work. This, combined with my fall on wednesday = ouch!).
I felt it in canter at first, and it soon became that as I was rising, when I sat down, I really jolted my back and it was making me a bit breathless. I slowed down, shortened my stirrups and tried to ride more in jumping position. By the end, my back was really hurting, so after the lesson ended, waved my parents off and went to get a drink and sit down.

This afternoon, we had a helpers lesson, and as I was riding Albert I was pretty excited! My back was still hurting, so didnt go bareback as I'd planned :(

I was in such pain, trot wasn't comfy, canter was bad too. I had a couple of canters on Albert (nice speedy ones :D), steering was a bit off :o Then swapped onto my beloved Bonnie! Managed one canter on her, then had to stick to trot and walk, my back wasn't happy at all. *sigh*

I feel so mixed up about today! I had such a good time on Pally, my parents were really impressed with how I'd improved, but my back ruined it. Was so excited about the helpers lesson, and maybe going bareback, but my back ruined it. I feel like I let down the horses, and myself. Albert, Pally and Bonnie are all such ACE horses, who really try hard when you work with them, but I felt like this useless lump. Steering went right out the window, diagonals wrong... I've worked so hard since february, and feel like I've taken a huge step back :(

Add in to all of this, I've been told I'm not going to be allowed to do the XC in the august pony week :(:( They said the fences are too big for me, and they want me to be safe, but cant they just build a mini jump? A line of plastic boxes in the field, even? I'll do the dressage and a bit of the SJ, but I just felt so useless, I'll be standing around while the others go off and have fun in the field...

On a different note, at the end of the pony week, the staff will be doing a one day event type thingy, with us lot judging and grooming for them. One of the instructors came up to me this morning and asked me to be her groom! I'm really touched she asked me, gotta get practising my plaiting now!
~
Will someone tell me I'm being silly? I feel a bit down and sorry for myself :(:o

Sorry for HUGE pics! :o

Oh hun.

Warm baths. Try Nurofen/Ibuprofen if you can take it. And give yourself a break! In future, if you don't already, do some gentle stretches before and after riding; they should help if you have any unexpected 'funny angles' or falls. Also Arnica will take the bruising down.

You are doing extremely well!! Please don't be so hard on yourself, you have to learn to see the good :D. You have come on so well.

I know it's disappointing about the cross-country, but watch and learn. Next year you will be doing it :D

As to anything else, yesterday I completely forgot which diagonal I should sit on. Blank. Couldn't remember. Still couldn't remember today and had to ask D1 :D. It happens. Do not stress.

Hot choccy and a hug :)

Don't be bummed!! sounds like you've had an action packed week! Horses totally are two steps forward and one step back, so don't be too hard on yourself.

Sorry about your fall & I hope your back feels better soon :)

Your not being silly,it's a set back and you are right to feel it.
However-there is no point mooping about feeling sorry for yourself! Your parents spotted your imporvement,so even if you think you were not riding as well as normal you have still made progress AND there is a clear reaosn for you not doing so well. Back pain is a nightmare, riding with back pain is the worst thing in the world IMO,everything goes to pot and there is nothing you can do to stop it.

You did good work with a small(yet painfull) back injury. That will clear up and your progress this year is not lost.
It's pat on the back time girl :)

Sounds like you have been busy! You've ridden more than I have in the last two weeks lol!

Best tip I've been given with folding is to think that you have a tray on your back..just wish I was given one for folding over the jump at the right time!

Don't be too hard on yourself. You'll be showing them all next year which is more than I can say as I have a virtually non-loader lol!

Everyone falls off! You will fall off when you are learning and you will fall off as you continue to learn throughout your life. I subscribe to the notion that falling off just dins the lesson into you a bit harder (and makes it more memorable)! And one of those lessons is..falling off hurts! My OH falls off pretty frequently and it usually precedes a massive improvement in his riding (he likes to learn things the hard way) ;)

It's understandable that you are disappointed about not jumping xc, but given your current standard of jumping (and this is most definitely not meant as having a go!) do you think that you would feel confident doing it? Jumping a whole course of solid, fixed obstacles is quite different to a single jump in a grid and your instructor is almost certainly being sensible and making sure that you are safe and enjoying yourself while you learn! Resolve that you are going to keep working really hard on your jumping and that you'll be whizzing round a course, brim full of confidence, next year on the riding week :)

You HAVE made progress, it doesn't seem too long ago that you were asking for cantering tips and here you are riding different horses and doing lots of jumping! As you try more challenging things its bound to feel more difficult and we all have days when we feel like a sack of potatoes in the saddle, no matter how long we've been riding!

If the instructors say you aren't ready for XC then listen to them and tbh if you are having steering problems in canter in the school, they are probably right!!

Onwards and upwards :-)

The pictures look great, and I love to read how you are really trying and progressing. Don't worry when things go wrong, they do sometimes and all we can do is learn from them. And remember everyone has good and bad days!!! I have felt like that often, sometimes wonder why I put myself through it, then will have a great day its you know why you do it. Be proud of yourself!!!!

Hey, what's all this about!!!!! :(

Everyone, whether we've been riding for 12 years or 12 days suffers setbacks - even someone I know who's been riding for 40 years suffers set backs both with her health and bad lessons!! It even happens to the pros ;) we saw William Fox-Pitt hit the deck at Lincs horse trials...
Everyone deals with bad lessons in different ways - I tend to be in a bad mood for the rest of the day! :p

You've come on fantastically even in the short time I've been on this forum, I've been following your pics and reports and seeing how you improve!
Your folding jumping position looks like its improved ten thousand times, so keep at it!!

And them not allowing you to do the 3DE at the end of August only means you have more time to learn and you'll ace it next time round ;) ;) so no worries! You'd rather be confident doing it and able to enjoy it, I'm sure :)

Chin up, nurofen, warm baths (book yourself in for a swedish massage, they help an old riding injury of mine no end!) and plenty of TLC for you!! Take these lessons as a lesson to yourself if anything, you HAVE to make mistakes in order to progress onwards and upwards! So stop feeling bad and just think about how you're going to improve from here on in :)

MrsMozart - Thank you MM! You really do inspire me with your pics of jumping The Dizzy One, I'll get there one day!!

Maletto - Horses are just very frustrating things! Thank you :)

Yunalesca - Just not on my lower back!! Thank you for that, I've been trying to look on the bright side, as actually more good happened today then bad! x

LaurenM - Hehe, not bad for a riding school junkie, eh? Thank you, and I'm sure your non-loader will be loading like a pro soon!

fadedv - I know... I just wish I didnt fall off quite so frequently! I know I'm not up to jumping a whole course of SJ yet, let alone XC ones, but if there was a weeny log or something, I could do that... Ah well! Just got to work hard and keep at it :)

Wobblywibble - Thank you! I know that my instructors know best, I was just a bit disappointed :( And I normally have quite good steering, and in canter its getting better every ride (steered speedy pally quite well this morning :D), just that this afternoon I felt so poop that I couldnt concentrate :(

Thank you guys for all the kind words, I feel like a bit of a muppet, but as Sol said to me:

"...if every day was perfect, what would be the point in tomorrow?"

You inspired me hun :D. Picture of you in my mind with those pigtails flying :D. Helped to keep me going yesterday :D.

Be proud of what you have achieved and keep at it.

Sweet dreams, I'm off to bed :)

Quartz - Thanks quartz, I just have to remember all the good bits (jumping position cantering, riding different horses...) I suppose! xx

KellysHeroes - Thank you so much K, I know that by next year I'll have hopefully improved quite a bit! I am planning to maybe be a working pupil next summer and gain some of my BHS qualifications, so onwards and upwards :)

I've taken a nice pink Ibuprofen pill (normally they make me feel REALLY high, but its not working! :() and might book in with an osteopath or a masseuse to give the back a once over :o Oh, and tomorrow will be for lying flat on my back, stretching or sitting in a hot bath! xx

Ahh, the plaits... Little blighters!! Only serve hilarity really :D

I'll be thinking of you and The Dizzy One :)

Night xx

Definitely go for it ;) my massage sessions do much more for me than all the stupid painkillers they keep sticking me on!!
There you go then, next year you'll be the one doling out this advice for people in the same situation at your yard! :)
Onwards and upwards as you say...

P.S at least the weather looks nice..I couldn't get any pics from my Kerry lesson last week for you as our weather was bobbins!!!!!!

Just gotta find someone to massage/crack-a-lack-ify my back now! Any suggestions?

Hehe, we'll see, eh?!

Weather was good when riding, not too hot not too cold, but otherwise varied between chilly and sweltering... British weather!

Hehe... bobbins :D

Haha bobbins thats a regional thing I think ;)
erm the woman who does my massages is at my local beauty salon type thing..?
Google it? X

But which region? I am half northern ya know! (Half scouse to be precise :D)

I def will, might take a short walk down to my doctors surgery tomorrow and see who they recommend, will do me good to get the muscles moving! xx

Your bad back probably stems from you trying too hard. You are constantly working on doing it right and still perfecting your balance/seat and getting your legs to stay in the correct position. This will take its toll and you have done way more this week than usual. The bale lifting, the fall and other stuff wont help. It could even be that one pony is not quite level behind - that too will jar up your back.

I'm afraid I agree that whilst you enthusiasm knows no bounds and your confidence is up, you probably aren't ready for XC. Again, consider the effects on the ponies' backs of an unbalanced beginner who struggles to maintain their seat, canter and balance over a fence. Add in the terrain (assuming it will be round a field of some description) and it doesn't seem that surprising they are putting the safety of you and the pony first.

Yo need to get your back sorted, or the riding will only make it worse. Is it shooting pains or merely a dull ache? Pains suggest a trapped nerve to me, but I'm not back specialist. Certainly this will affect your security and position even more than normal.

Are we really that bad????????!!

Can anybody cope without riding ! :p

Hmm..... :D:D And no, who in their right mind could cope without riding/being around horses? Its madness I say!

brighteyes - Thats kind of what my Dad said, that as I've been riding 3 times more a week than I normally have I'm all of a sudden using certain muscles more frequently than my body is really ready for.

I know that the instructor's are only putting our safety first. (But the field is pretty flat... Not even a teeny weeny row of boxes to pop over?)

It's hard trying to describe the pain... It was as if, as I sat down in trot, or in canter, there was a jarring and it kind of took my breath away. I will go and ask around for recommendations of an osteopath in the are just to get it checked out.

Some gratuitous videos of the lovely lovely horse and ponies who put up with me :o:D

Please excuse my weird voice in these!!

Thelwell_girl,
really really sorry to hear about your setbacks and having a rough well.
Trust me....everyone has them from beginners, through to the best riders in the world. So ((())) big hugs, hope your back gets better soon and things start to get better.
Often things get worse before they get better, so you may just be having a rough week before an amazing week next time.
We used to do lots of practice of jumping position at halt. Then a lap of the arena in walk. Then in trot, then in canter, making sure we folded from the hips, pushed our hips back (not a huge movement, but enough to make you stable and fold), head up, eyes looking straight through the ears, heels down etc. Then we would do a lap or two of the arena in a jumping position doing transitions from halt to walk then halt again, then walk to trott and back to walk then trot to canter and back to trot then walk, all whilst in a jumping position so that you get used to different speeds and transitions etc.
It will come in time!!!

On a seperate note......how do your chaps feel. They are quite long and seem to come right up in the back of your knee.
Do you find that they ever pinch the back of your knee or feel tight in anyway, if so do they distract you at all.
Im not suggesting that is going to help your jumping at all....but when i was younger i had a pair of chaps that were too long and used to be really distracting as when you moved they would pinch or feel tight in the back of your knee. I got some different ones and they just made everything feel so much better.
My current ones stop at least 2 inches below my knee.

Just a thought!

Hi Skychick - Thank you for the message! I think I was really having a bad day, my riding was poo cos of my back, but it is getting better now.

I'll try that in my next lesson! I had my first canter in jumping position last sunday, and scary as it was (one FAST horse!) I felt quite secure, and it was fun!

With regards to my chaps, they are juuust about right! I'm teeny weeny myself, so struggled to find any chaps that didnt cover my knees, but these fit nicely (I could wear them all day!). I think they look a bit high because they're cut high on the outside of the leg?

Thank you for the support and the tips xx

i wouldn't worry about a fall or two- i fall off all the time :D (indeed had an absolute corker of a fall yesterday- onto the fence, then got trodden on...now have a bruised rib and a manky black hip that won't work properly:eek:) i think as long as you know why you come off then thats fine- its all a learning curve!!
re. your back- it shouldn't really be feeling like its 'jarring'. definitely get yourself checked out by a physio/ chiro- in the meantime though you can take anti-inflams, ice it or put a hot water bottle on it (alternate the two) and have lots of hot baths. but i do agree that part of the reason why its hurting is probably all the riding you've been doing if you aren't used to it- esp if you've been trying to perfect your jumping position as its asking you to hold a position which isn't something your body is used to. try to 'protect' your lower back by 'tensing' your stomach muscles...
i know you are gutted about the XC but i honestly think that your instructors have your best interests at heart- if you were to fall off XC it would probably set your confidence back further. why not invest in some more jumping lessons over the summer to help you improve more quickly in this area?

Well I looked at the first few photos on there and thought your position was much improved from last time I saw your photos :D Cheer up hun, its no wonder things were going a bit wrong when you were in pain - thats nobody's fault! But hey, even if those photos were the first time you achieved that position, at least you now have something to work with and improve. :) The hardest bit is often getting the hang of what you are supposed to do in the first place, so you need to recognise yourself for being so good at getting that sorted!

Well done on being asked to groom - see, the staff don't think you're going backwards, do they?!

Hope your back is feeling better now, but if not (and in any case this is a good tip for the future!) try this- put two soluble aspirins in your nice hot bath. It sounds mad but it does work! My daughter had a nasty fall and ached all over, she did this and the next day had no pain anywhere except in her neck which she hadn't soaked in the hot bath water! That night she did it again but made sure her neck got seen to, and the next day that was painfree too! cheap and effective treatment, and if your back still hurts after that, you need a doctor!

QR - Please, please do as was pointed out to you last time, and put your hair up safely out the way. If when you'd fallen off the horse had trodden on one of them and scalped you, you'd be in far more pain right now!!

Also, I wouldn't be jumping with a schooling whip if I were you :o If you want to carry a whip when jumping then change to a crop so that you don't accidentally catch the horse.

Good luck on feeling better. :)
