Trundled off to local eventer’s indoor arena, where Clayton Fredrick’s was giving lessons

Tacked up etc. and walked in. spent the first 20 minutes or so flexing and bending as merlin isn’t truly on the bit, he tends to go just above the correct outline, and concentrated on making him react to the leg and him to go when I asked etc.
Was really good, CF said that think of your forearm as part of the reins, and move your elbows when you want to move the horse. I found it really good, and made me really think about how I was turning Merlin
laugh.gif

Was told off for letting him come up slightly off bit, CF wanted merlin to round more and to soften in the contact, which was achieved by the end
laugh.gif

Then we did poles set in the corner, ie. This formation \\|// around the corner, with the \|/ raised up on a slant, so made the horses really pick their hinds up and brought the hinds underneath them more. We found it really difficult to get the correct canter, but once we found it the exercise became easier, but still difficult for the horse. I am going to use this exercise again; it was really really good!!

Then we kept doing loops on the way to poles; it was based on balance, suppleness and rhythm really
laugh.gif
merlin is very supple at the moment, due to stretching exercises and use of the equilibrium massage thingy, which has been amazing!! So we found the looping easy, but the actual keeping him up to the bit difficult; he tended to drop behind the bit and mince

We finished the lesson on jumping a fence, which Merlin was simply fantastic
laugh.gif
grin.gif
he kept the elasticity that we had worked on, and didn’t change his rhythm at all
grin.gif

So excellent lesson imo, and very lucky that we had our lesson when we did, as have just heard that the electricity has gone in that area

I have a couple of pics, but unfortunately dad isn’t very good

smile.gif

Glad u had a good lesson, CF seems fab

it really was a great lesson
laugh.gif

my aunt gave me some money for christmas, so i spent it on a lesson with him
laugh.gif
£50 for group lesson - well worth it imo
laugh.gif

but £140 for a private lesson
crazy.gif
maybe not...

dad thought he had great photos, unfortunatley not

tongue.gif

the poles were set out so you had 2 trot steps/strides inbetween each on, we had to trot through it first getting 2 steps in between each pole
laugh.gif

I think the corner exercise has become my new best friend
grin.gif
tongue.gif
lol how sad am i...

thats why i went for a group lesson
tongue.gif
lol

still, private lesson with normal person (shortlisted for olypmics) is £20 or £25 per hour.
laugh.gif

nice for a one off

Sounds great, I did a very similar corner pole thingy with Christopher Bartle but they were for corner bounce strides - really quite difficult!

I have to say I had a lesson with JP Sheffield and Ken Clawson when I was on a baby horse (green 5yo) and they INSISTED on walk to canter on both reins, also canter to walk, repeat until you've got it 100% perfect. It's only done my horse the world of good, no harm at all. Might toddle over to NL and say something similar..... (on second thoughts it's a bit scary there

ooh dear

Fleur01 was in the ride when the lights went out
blush.gif

the corner pole thingy was excellent
laugh.gif

i think the pro's expect your horse to walk-canter-walk on command, and i taught it to merlin when he was younger (well, walk to canter anyway)

careful you dont get bitten off

tongue.gif

Yeah I had a lesson with Caroline Moore with Goddy as a 4yr old and she was the same, prob from Ken tbh, canter to walk and walk to canter... he is now very good at it
tongue.gif

Not fair - I was meant to have a lesson with him today but there's so much snow here I couldn't even get up the hill to the yard, never mind going back down it with a horsebox
frown.gif

Sounds brill though! I'll have to give the corner thing a try!

were you meant to be in the 5pm ride? we were one person short.

sorry to hear you couldnt get there
frown.gif

sorry, but gotta ask, where do you live to get snowed in?!

Yeah, it was the 5pm!
I'm in Dublin - but out near Wicklow at the bottom of the Dublin mountains. Yeah, it's soooo annoying, my parents live up north and they said there was no snow there - typical!

aww
frown.gif
poor you
frown.gif
i could have met you!
tongue.gif

we were lucky as we are 20mins away from smiths
frown.gif

email EI and ask if you can go in with another group?
we have no snow

was the clinic in steven smiths yard?i would imagine he would be a very good teacher himself and i would presume a lot cheaper.he has been leading rider in ireland most years and is on the long list for the irish team again for 2009

yep calafornia, was at steven smiths yard
laugh.gif

he is a FANTASTIC teacher - he is my usual instructor
laugh.gif
he has the most amazing way of teaching and getting complicated terms seem easy
laugh.gif
plus he will always help you at an event if needed - he will go over course with you and give you advice on how to ride it etc. he also teaches at pc

Unfortunately I don't think I'll be able to take another day off work this week, otherwise I'd definitely try to get in another group. Ah well, I'll try again next time
smile.gif

You're lucky having Eric Smiley and Stephen Smith to get lessons with up there too - there's surprisingly few eventing trainers around where I am.

soudns fantastic, have just watched the team federicks programme on h&c tv and they come across as such nice people and very knowledgable.
smile.gif
i would love a lesson with either of them
grin.gif

i would say merlin looks fab, but cant really see

I had a lesson with Clayton at Hartpury as part of the prize for winning one of those EHOA thingies - I thought he was really good: clear, very motivated (not always the case at one-off clinics, is it?) and quite fierce which I didn't mind but was surprised at! I got off quite lightly all in all but some people were absoltely crucified if they appeared not to try hard enough to do as they were asked. It had to be perfect every time - I'm sure it is this perfectionist attitude which has helped both the Freddos get to where they are without the advantages that some pros started with. That and quite a commercial attitude - £140 a lesson is good going if you can get it

grin.gif
Good on him...
cool.gif

Did anybody go to one of his lessons today? It'd be interesting to see if he was behaving as some people said he did yesterday as maybe he was just having a bad day. I've never had a lesson with him but I met him a couple of times and he came across as a nice, down to earth man so I found some of the reports quite surprising and kinda disappointing
crazy.gif
But then, I guess you can't get on well with everybody and his methods can suit some riders and not others...

peachesandcream - i know
blush.gif
dad needs some more practice...
tongue.gif
thanks
laugh.gif

td- he was very animated
wink.gif
lol i thought he was great
grin.gif

HM - yep they were canter poles in the corner (2 trot strides in between)

Lizze - i think claireL is taking another horse today, so will await with interest!
tongue.gif
I thought his teaching style was to the point but not in a nasty way; he made me really work!
laugh.gif

WOW!! over 1100 views

Seems like most people ended up happy enough with Claytons lessons - with a few exceptions! My horse is still not fit enough so couldn't ride, but watched a few lessons and definitely the people who came to more than one seemed much happier as they could see a bit of progress. Makes you wonder though as you could have private lessons with the Smiths for the same amount of money on a regular basis! They both have so much experience and are such clear, simple instructors - and they aren't put off if your horse isn't a 'superstar' in the making. I would definitely say that lessons as often as possible with the best local trainers can get the best out of you and your horse in both performance and confidence terms, as you can build on your progress and one bad day doesn't make you feel so depressed if you can work towards the next lesson and prove your progress!
