This feels like a bit of a silly question but... when having lessons on a share horse, do people use their own instructor or one of the owner's preference, or both? I can see benefits for each - on the one hand 'my' instructor knows me and I feel she does wonders for my confidence, on the other the owner's instructor is known to them and knows the horse.

ETA - instructor being a qualified and insured person who teaches professionally - if I were an owner I know I would not like a random person turning up who 'teaches'.

Would depend on what your sharing agreement is.

I personally wouldn't like being stipulated to regarding choice of coach as it's such a personal thing.

With our herd we have a couple of sharers. There are a very few local instructors that we'd totally veto for one reason or another, but have always been happy for them to bring their own otherwise. One of us would always be about to watch the first one though and if we didnt like what was done they're given another selection of options!

I'd just chat with the owner and see what they say. And sometimes a change is as good as the rest and you might find someone new pushes you to things you didnt know you could do.

My sharer took my horse home for a month to Cheshire when I was travelling and had a lesson with her instructor. I didn’t think much of it as frankly if I trust her to take my horse home I trust her to choose a suitable instructor.

That said I would prefer to know who was being used in his usual home.

When I had a sharer the first time, I was also the instructor, so no issues there (it was a very novice rider anyway - who ended up doing BS and hunting!).

The second time, the sharer had a trainer they had used a lot before, and as I trusted her, she continued to use them. She was also quite novice in a lot of ways, but very mature and truthful so I knew that any issues would be reported back.

In both cases, sharing was a delight. I wouldn't share with anyone who I didn't feel I was sharing a huge adventure with.

I’ve helped my sharers find instructors that work for them and me. I’d not automatically expect a shared to use my trainer. Different people have different learning styles. I would veto any trainer who had a different approach to the way of going they aim for as horse needs consistency to best progress.

I think personally, from both sides I'd want to know who the trainer was and if it wasnt someone I knew I'd like to see them teach and/or ride before I committed to anything.
I'll have the odd lesson off anyone but I'm picky about where I spend my money for longer term training, I like to have a trainer I can have a chat and laugh with, where i can give some input on things I'd maybe like to try etc

I’ve always asked my sharers to use my instructor to begin with as my instructor has taught my mare from the beginning so knows her inside out and can teach the sharer how to ride my horse. Once I’m happy with their riding then I would happily let them use their own instructor but I would want to watch their first lesson so I could see the instructor was sympathetic to my horses way of going (which at the moment is giraffe but this is due to history of teeth issues). If I didn’t like the instructor then I’d say no.
