Sunday afternoon musings to distract me from housework, slightly inspired by the 'just a horse' poem.

I've learned so much from the horses in my life both in terms of riding and life lessons:

- my first pony, B - that laughing is more important than winning...and that if you tip forward when cantering without a saddle and the pony bucks you WILL fall off! That one took a few lessons ;)

- my horse, D - that if you aren't getting the answers you want then you need to rethink the question.

- my friend's cob, F - that 'kind hearts are more than coronets, and simple faith than Norman blood'...and that the quietest horse will still panic and run with the right provocation.

What have the horses in your life taught you?

In terms of both general life and horses:

How much your emotions affect how you behave. Even if you think you are acting calmly, you probably aren't!

And in turn, getting angry will take you two steps backwards,

Controlling my emotions and heaps of patience.

Boring I know but, Patience, patience and more patience, and never stop learning as already said by other posters.

Also that all ponies/horses are different and what works for one doesn't for another.

Like us characters are set but behaviors can change.

That there are beings in this world that are kind, loving, giving and patient to a fault....and they are NOT humans.

That the most effective tools in the tool box are kindness, patience, determination........and horsey treats :D

That you need to ask, not tell.

That when all hell breaks loose, it's best to sit tight and let him run it off :D

That he really does not realise that we are never going to make THAT jump at THIS speed

That love is unconditional.

Main lesson,

...LIFE JUST ISNT ALWAYS FAIR, and sometimes people who are nasty and horrid do not get their comeuppance!!...I am slowly learning to forget about everyone else and just worry about me and Av :-D

So many lessons I have learnt! Heres a few..
Horses are the most unpredictable things on earth!
Even though it's slightly weird, talking to a horse about your problems is a lot better than speaking to a human.
The only option is have a secure seat or your off!
Even the horse which everyone hates can sometimes be perfect for you.
The best view on earth is between a horse's ears.
Theyve shown me how emotional I actually am :o
And lastly, that no matter how down you can be a horse can put a smile on your face.

Edited to say, there not really lessons as such, just things I have learnt :)

You will learn forever

Never get frustrated or angry - it won't get you anywhere!

If the horse is cantering confidently towards the jump, sit back...chances are he'll stop ;) (or was that just Rebel!)

One field. One large muddy puddle. Always makes for one bog pony...

Never buy any expensive, pretty "field gear" like boots or muzzles. They will end up filthy and/or lost!

Never stop loving for your horse will never stop loving you.

That facing my fears is what helps me to conquer them.

That I work best as part of a team.

That it really isn't as far down as it looks:D

So many of the above, about patience, learning, individuality.

That I am still a complete horsy addict even as I get older, and I am glad of it.

One thing that has translated into my working life with teenagers is, dont take things personally. Strangely enough this has been so useful. I am sure the teenagers I work with would be far less than flattered to realise I see them as akin to young horses but I dont mean it as in an insulting way.

A pretty face gets you out of all sorts of trouble...:D

A big heart goes further than a pretty face...

Chestnut mares are not as bad as people think...they are far worse!

Just cos it is a Sporthorse doesnt mean it will partake in a sport.

A very pretty face gets you lots of cuddles.

Never by a roan

Just cos they are little doesnt mean they cant jump...

Just because it's small and cute and carries children with the greatest of patience doesn't mean it won't deck you and make off for home like stink if you underestimate it!!

You CANNOT pick up a welsh a foal like a big dog

If you borrow your boyfriends lovely slouchy jumper to wear onq cold day at yard, steed will slime al over it (Thanks Seamus!)

When you have a hangover the ponies you are trying to catch will pick up on it and immediately form a not-catching-us allegiance.

If you treat it like a foolish animal, it will behave as such.

And of course, patience, patience, patience!
