Sad to read he has passed away this morning. At 86 he had had a huge rollercoaster of a life!

An utterly ruthless and determined professional. The punishment and sacrifice he endured year after year just to make the weight was truly awe inspiring. Racing has changed a lot since his day - cameras, drones, whip rules - but somehow I think he could have adapted and still won.

There is a story in one newspaper that recalled he drove the wrong way round a roundabout when "racing" another jockey. The will to win.

Michael remembered an occasion when Lester had lost his whip so grabbed one off another jockey.
