Let it scab or not? Over reach injury?

Got my newly BF gelding in from the field yesterday to find he's got a cut on his heel bulb - it looks like an over reach injury as i can't imagine how another horse could have done it.

I've cleaned it thoroughly so there's no dirt left and applied iodine to disinfect. He isn't bothered with me touching it and doesn't seem lame at all with it. It's not a deep cut more of a surface scrape. It isn't bleeding.

I don't know whether to let it scab over or try to keep it fresh. Any suggestions?

Sorry i know it was a stupid question, i just don't want it to get dirty. I've kept him in for now as i don't want it getting filthy but once it's scabbed would i be okay putting him back in the field? He doesn't cope well stabled in summer as all the other horses on his block live out pretty much 24/7 so he's on his own.

Over reach boots maybe to stop him catching it again? :-)
 
I would just spray it with purple spray then turn out, it is not deep and will heal within a few days if you do not keep opening it up by washing. I would not use an over reach boot while it is still healing as it will rub and as he has no shoes on would not use them to prevent it happening again, they can do more harm than good, he will probably stop once he has got used to being without shoes and got the break over and balance correct.
