I remember:

When my horse had 2 rugs: a NZ and a stable rug. Regular blankets used for extra warmth!

When i used to TOTALY enjoy my hobby, live in the moment and was never worried about, falling off, them being injured etc.

I remember riding hats with a lining that you adjusted with string for the best fit!

I remember when a wax jacket was the thing to be seen in - even better, i remember when horses had NO relation to fasion. You wore ancient jumpers and t-shirts and cheap wellies. only the posh had hunters!

Remember string girths

Hacking to shows/ Pony Club rallies and never thinking a thing about it

Jute rugs!

NO, Internet, mobile phones, xbox's and the like

You were in the minority if you DIDN'T ride in a snaffle.

Summer holidays were long, hot and sunny

Oh I'd better stop, I could go on forever

I remember when Westropp Over reach boots were THE thing to have flapping on your horses tootsies!

When Clarendon boots were for showjumpers.

When Burberry was something that you wore to the yard and came in two styles-NEW or Covered in cack.

When wooden caveletti's were in every riding school.

Leather head collars were only seen on race horses-and every girl wanted one for her pony!

When all this was fields...................
grin.gif

I remember jute rugs and canvas nz rugs! making our own chop with a stupidly dangerous machine lol a major health and safety no no nowadays!! string girths, making cough bags to tie to bits!! Cantering on grass verges!! Jumping anything jumpable!! tying horse outside chippy!!

ah yes, fields, as far as the eye could see....looks out of window...actually, it still is, lol

we had one of those chop-your-hand-off machines where i used to work a big handle turning a big wheel with blades on, and some poor dope pushing hay down a chute with their hands

ah the days b4 health + safety lol

now now you cheeky monkey, bit of respect for your elders here!

actually im not even 40 yet, just seem to have been around horses forever,lol

haha 1st thing I remember was a little bay pony as round as a barrel that I used to ride in the riding school about 16 years ago (i was only 4) but I do remember about 10 years ago when the going rate for a decent 14h pony was about £1000 - they aren't so cheap any more.

Just laughed out loud and my OH is staring at me! I remember when sweaty hoorses wore either those string vests or were 'thatched'. There were no trugs, just black rubber skips or buckets. Grooming brushes were the correct shape, not these Bentley/Roma/Oyster same shaped brushes! I also remember when continental reins were the 'in' thing.

I remember when:-

-gymkhanas cost 75pence per race to enter;
-the excitement of reading the local paper on a saturday to see if there was a pony for sale my size (if you were a serious rider you bought your horse from Horse and Hound and everyone else bought one through the local papers). Who doesn't sell/trade/import horses these days?!
- riding hats where the elastic went round the front and not under your chin..especially dapper with a hairnet;
-grass reins made from baler twine;
-the only colour on a pony was a red or blue browband;
-"jockey skull caps";
-the first back protectors to come out, made from what felt like polystyrene that you cut to shape your body (my mother insisted!);
-paying £2.50 for a lesson and the outrage when it went up to £3;
-your horse had an allergy or was very expensive if it was on shavings;
-cavallettis and solid wood poles
-mucking out listening to Dave Lee Travis and Pot Black

That's enough.....xx

I'm sure a half hour lesson was about 10s. I used to walk to school and save the 3d bus fare each way, and have a lesson every 3-4 weeks - my parents refused to part with any cash for my mad horsey obsession. My hat was a cork lined one - paid for with Christmas money, and the thin chin elastic certainly wouldn't have held it on if I fell off. I saved up and bought new boots and jodhs (before that I wore school shoes and jeans but they were cheap tescos jeans that were too big and pinched), and I bought a tweed jacket from a jumble sale and altered it to fit.
I used to walk miles to the stables too.

shoes £5 a set
jute rugs still have 2
new zealand rugs heavy took ages to dry
string girths
gamgee on a roll
jumping at shows 50p
gymkanna 25p

sugar beet 1.75 a bag and the bags were huge
riding to shows
less cars on the road
riding lesson 50p-75p an hour
people were happy with what they had
children rode ponies teenagers rode cobs adults rode horses hay 75p

BTW what ever happended to cavaletis ( excuse spellng)

PS Crying the day that Ryan's Son died (John Whittaker horse);
PPS Annette Lewis and a horse called Tutein...and everyone in the yard desperately trying to copy her style xx

I remember .....
Taking our saddles off and jumping bareback in RS lessons.
Cantering on the grass verge of an A road ... not so much traffic then.
Never, ever having a back lady or dentist to my pony ..... because there weren't any!

I learnt to ride without ever going on the lead rein; we used to ride the school ponies round the field with no tack and we had no hats, body protectors etc., ponies managed with 3 rugs - jute, nz and sweat rug for shows; the choice of bit was between a snaffle and a pelham; a grooming kit consisted of: dandy brush, body brush, water brush, mane comb, curry comb, hoof pick, hoof oil, tail bandage, 2 sponges (one for each end) - none of this mane and tail conditioner, baby wipes, cowboy magic, and all the fancy brushes you can get now..... the list goes on!
