As thread title really- big fan of using natives, irish draughts and thoroughbreds when breeding , these unfotunately seem to be overlooked in favour of foreign warmbloods these days. few months ago it was suggested by a H&H columnist (think it was Pammy Hutton but don't quote me on that) in H&H that these breeds be used more often in breeding programmes.

I have the same mindset as you, so as I have a multitalented Welsh D stallion, I have put him to smaller TB mares to produce teenagers (hopefully) eventers/showjumpers. Here are three full brothers/sisters out of a 2* mare. The bay has jumped clear CC all 8 BE events this season, and finished off with a second. Look forward to next year!

Oh, and just to show how Welsh "D"s can jump, here is a two year old by my stallion.

Casper - 15.2hh Connemara

Monica - 13.2hh native/ native x (we think)

Sorry for lack of action pics, but Casper jumps anything you ask of him (jumps over a metre courses at home, but is still young and green), and Monica took me from jumping 75cm courses, to 1.10m courses, and she is now on loan to a 12 year old to teach her a thing or 2. Just shows even chunkier, hairier breeds are just as talented as WB (although I do love Wings, my WB and he is pretty talented too )

Wow, He looks stunning as do the others in the pics.

I totally agree that he will produce fantastic allrounder horses for teens and adults alike, unfortunately our native breeds don't get the coverage that warmbloods do. my friend who events has sold her tb crosses and native and ID x types and replacing them with warmbloods ( seems to me they are v. problematic).

vikkiandmonica - your horses look lovely, am a big fan of connies myself, they cross well with tb's and IDs too - my friend in ireland is selling some top connemara stock at moment due to illness and am really tempted to buy from her.

Cumbriamax - I would definitely buy another Connie, they can be stubborn at first, but once you get them on side and bond with them, they try their hardest and are very honest. Actually, Monica is the same, must be a native thing

vikkiandmonica- I know what you mean bout 'getting natives on side', my mare (native but not sure what breed - looks very like sec.d) was like that to start with - wouldn;t jump with me but after a while she proved to be amazing jumper shame am too tall to ride her now- she is happily retired in field with occasional hacking.

He's very bold and honest, everything I could ask of a horse- only problem is that he's stopped growing Nevertheless he's definitely my special horse (btw I have bought this photo but as I've said before on another thread this photo is better quality than taking a picture of a picture.)

This is my Cleaveland Bay x TB (I think he counts as a native!). He's 16.1hh and a bit of a sweetie, but boy can he buck when he puts his mind to it!

This is Herbie:-

Herbie was born in 1982 and died in 2008. He was a registered british riding pony but he grew too big to be a show pony and was actually 15.3hh. He was out of a WelshxTB mare and an Arab stallion so very unfashionable breeding by todays standards.

He was a total gentleman, the most athletic horse I have ever known, talented and very sound. Just an absolute sweetie! When he was 6 he came 2nd in the newcomer finals at Hickstead and then qualified foxhunter the next year. He could pop round a 1m40 course like it was made of X poles. He didn't move, he floated and to watch him move you could barely see his feet touch the ground.

When we had him he qualified HOYS again for the 2nd time SJ, he did PC eventing with me (where he won the southern championships), he hunted, did sponsored rides, dressage, showing, horseball, more showjumping (2nd in the PC teams at Hickstead). He was one of those rare horses who could look after a novice round a 2ft3 course yet could jump the top of the wings with an experienced rider. He made everything feel efforrtless. He didn't have very good conformation but he was so athletic and light on his feet I think thats the main reason he sayed so sound

He could be spooky and stick in the odd buck though, just for a laugh! One of his half brothers was an advanced event horse and another of his half brothers was on the british pony event team.

The picture above and the one below were taken with me riding when he was 22/23 so he was an old horse but still going strong! 3 weeks before he died of colic aged 26 he had qualified for yet another unaffilliated SJ champs.

He was a very special horse, totally british. RIP Herbs

This is my current horse J. He is a 5yr old English Throughbred. He is super! He can more than hold his own against the flashy warmbloods. He is talented and bold but he also has the most adorable personality:-

I have nothing against warmbloods! (British bred ones ) but I do not think that you need to travel abroad to get good horses as we have so many in this country. I think we should celebrate our british breeds more, it would be nice if they were more fashionable! Tb's have had such bad press with the high wastage out of racing but I think more and more people are starting to do a U turn with them.

This is Loagn, bout from the mart straight off the hills as a 2 yr old. My oh and his brother ad sister broke him in and learnt to ride on him as kids. He hunts, jumps (anything!!) shows, does side saddle and pony raced. A SERIOUS charactor, once known, never forgotten! He has been on loan all over the country and won at most shows where he has been too. He once went on loan to a well known NH trainer for his kids, he refused to jump the silly little poles they put out for him as he hed already eyed up the chase fences! Took the girls over that no problem!! He also used to let himself out of his stable at night and go and chat up all the racehorses....! Oops!!

Hi I never thought about cleveland bays- yeah i think they count as natives!!think one of ruth edges four star horses bred by Ann Lawson is part CB!!!could be marsh mayfly but not sure.

Ballet - CobxTB. Cross country horse. Absolutely loves it. Cannot wait to start eventing next year, after only managing 1 event this year, which was before the vet prescribed 6 monthes of rest!

Spanner - Irish Sports Horse. She'd been sat on 5 times before I bought her.

Abbott - Welsh Sec B - a 12.3hh games pony, been to HOYS, and is a cheeky chap.

Bunny - British Riding Pony, we bought him as a project, had him for a couple of monthes, when the vets found a cyst in his hoof (cyst was size of average 17hh horse - he's 12.2hh). So he lives a happy retirement life at the age of 8.

Storm - another retiree. Native X Been both my sisters and my own pony, literally the grumpiest bag out, a mare out and out. Made you learn to sit on! Problem rearer, also bucked. Done a tendon and ligaments, so at 22 she's retired.

Polo is a Connie X (left), Lucy was a Connie X Native, Lucy's now 27, and still do everything she did when she was 10! Both are amazing ponies.

My ISH (75% ID x TB)

As far as competition goes, he's only a local winner at Working Hunter, he's been placed out Hunter Trailing and is a superb hunter. For me, the ISH is the only breed. Depending on the strain of TB you have in your stock, its a horse for every purpose in my eyes.

Mrs P is a 16.2 middleweight huntery type bred in Leicestershire, her dad is Blue Horizon who is ID x welsh D I believe - something like that! I have met him & he's gorgeous and has a temperament to die for She does have some warmblood in her, mum is Dutch warmblood (Oberon) x TB.

As you can see she's quite a chunky girl (she will look a lot sleeker when I get some replacement clipper blades ) but she can be quite athletic and light on her feet when the mood takes her! She is also (too) clever and has a very big personality - think Bubbles DeVere turned into a horse

Here's my 15yo TBX, Dylan - don't know what the rest of him is but judging by his build and the woolly coat he grows in the winter he might be part native/ID. Isn't he handsome? Was never a fan of TBs before (my first horse was a WelshX), but since I got Dylan I adore them, would have one over a WB any day!
