I want to build some outdoors kennels but want something
' different'. Anyone prettied up mass produced ones.

or anyone have any photo's of 'pretty' ones ie painted wood or village style houses.

Bit off the wall but hey ho

Lets see you're kennels

The runs are the basic flatpack runs with roof and police-issue kennel boxes bought from same company.
We flagged them and put a roof on both after the first pic was taken.
As a rule they are only in here at night, in bad weather, if we are off the property and also for an hour or so after meals.

(Note beautiful holes, plus squirty bottle for zapping gobby female

) it looks a good deal better now!

The 'stockade'

or exercise run was built by our local builders, good for them to run around in, small flagged area with a three-sided shelter added later.
Put stones down as it was built on a boggy bit of our property and they turned it into a swamp

Thankyou, I love the runs and I really like the space they have, were they better value having the builder make them rather than buy them ready for assemble . I am interested because I want to set a up a small boarding kennels and want somewhere appealing to the owners and practical for dogs. I have a wooded copse that I'd like to put the kennels in as its really pretty and am looking for some ideas.

Can I ask if you needed planning permission for them ?

Haha - no PP for the stockade although I am sure, now you mention it, that we may have needed it
blush.gif
it cost in the region of 500-800 in terms of time, materials and labour, it is wooden because a mesh fence, which is what we wanted originally, would have cost a hell of a lot more.

No PP for the runs, they were cheap and cheerful, we needed them up quick because the dogs used to sleep in our outbuildings (was a massive set of stalls) which were demolished for renovation.
If you look at the pic of the grey male in the snow, you can see cable-ties on the main support - his sister is very bouncy and actually separated the mesh from the main frame - so not great for strong, bouncy dogs. Something more rigid would be best for you.

The best kennels I have seen are cement-floored, on a slight slope for draining, access to a nice individual outside area with wire mesh at all times and a blockhouse type arrangement for the indoor kennel, with a little raised bench.
At least two people I know have converted old stables for the job.

For a boarding kennels I would definitely recommend something bespoke, it will be worth it in the long run.
Your setting sounds lovely!
The place where our two went in the spring, had a large kennel complex, all mesh, sawdust bedding, all within a larger building, the runs were smaller than I expected, but they had two huge, fenced-in fields for exercise time.

Im having one made for my garden at the moment. I only have a very small garden (new build house so its like a postage stamp lol) so its going to take up a fair bit of it! I will post some pics when its up in a few weeks. Im having two small kennels with covered runs and a shed on the end.. like an all in one thing!! Im wanting it to look natural and not too industrial so that it fits in with everyones pretty gardens lol so fingers crossed it ends up how i want!!

Here's my mums kennels... I dont have any pictures just of the kennels but you can see them in the background. She only has two as the dogs dont live in them, just get put in them to dry off if they've been swimming or got muddy!! She now has hanging baskets and stuff on it though so it looks really pretty in the summer

Terrible pic, but this was when we first put it up:

I believe if you are planning to have boarding kennels you cannot have wood, it has to be metal or those plastic kennels... so thats something you'd need to look into
smile.gif

I am hoping to get away with needing large runs cos I'm going to mesh / fence off the copse so they can have the run of that in the day and return to the kennel / run for the night. Their play will be surpervised. and only if the dogs can socialise with others.

I also have a large river bank which will make a fantastic exercise area and we are five mins in the car from walks in the park / woods and beach so they wouldn't be bored.

You have given some food for though so thank you very much.

LOL thats exactly what I was trying to describe only you did it much better. I will look into the wood thing for boarders, I hadn't heard that before, it may be something to do with chewing ? in which case I may get them made of breeze block and clad them . I want the pretty thing cos my stable yard is all oak beams and hanging baskets n tubs so I want something to fit in and not stand out like a sore thunb.

Please do send me piccies when yours is finished i'd be interested to see. I love your mums aswell cos is looks practical but blends in well.

Apparently it is very difficult to get insurance which allows you to walk others dogs, so that is something to keep in mind.

Also, how gfar out of a town/city are you? As there is a department (can't remember which) that need to come out and assess the noise levels etc and whether it would be a nuisance to ones around you.

It must be possible otherwise how do all these dog walkers manager, I know lots will be un regulated, authorised etc but some will have insurance.

Noise won't be a problem as I am out of town with a road nearby and no near neighbours. The only noise will be what we generate

I have a really good book but to be honest it is more geared towards the full on 30+ kennels and huge rescue centres so some of the design is not relevant for me.

I think the metal/plastic thing is due to hygiene but could also be because of chewing. When we used a stud dog who's owner ran boarding kennels i remember her mentioning something about it in conversation but i dont know for sure...

I will post piccis of mine when they are finished

we are knocking the breeze blocl kennels down for wood ones so I can prettyfy them

however thats just for my own dogs.

Ah Cala, you would be in the know, can you have wooden kennels as a previous poster wasn't sure you could ?

And yes would love to see yours when finished.

Yeah, you may still beable to use wood, the kennels I did day release at when I was at agricultural college had the rescue dogs in wood kennels and the boarders in metal kennels, the reason metal or breeze blocks are more accepted is that they can be cleaned and are less likely to harbour viruses to reduce cross contamination, but my friend has wood kennels and she has coated them all with thick perspex so they can still be cleaned and they look cute and cottagey which is the way she wanted them to look.
The local cattery to me is also all wood built and coated inside with plastic cladding.

We have a concrete pad breeze block 3x4 x5ft sloping roof which we felted IAE dog runs 3x6 then painted breeze blocks red masonery paint in a block of 4 kennels dread to cost it out but a builder friend did it for nowt labour so it is very well built then rubber mats on cut down pallets inside and rubber clear pvc strips for doors. just got to renevate old wooden kennels, we do have 6 collies and 4 JRT's

Hi there,

I only have a second but if you are after boarding kennels I would advise avoiding wood - they are much much harder to keep clean and disinfected...

We have a mitton hall kennel, the f berth one and it's great as we can pressure wash / disinfect twice a day with no worry of any wood staying damp or rotting...
Have a look: http://www.mittonhallkennelsystems.com/

As above in commercial kennels it's best to go for the durable, practical washable materials the rescue kennels we sometimes use has his kennels in large thin metal sheets, all in white, but it still leaves u with an undesirable look compared to the cosey looking wood types

can't have it all
