I have 2 horses one has SI [vet diagnosed] the other doesnt but doesnt like flies much either. the horse with the SI has a Boett rug and also a couple of rambo SI hoodies. the other horse has the same as I decided that if I am keeping flies off I might as well keep midges off at the same time. The horse with the SI is fine except that the Boett tail cover isnt long enough. the Rambo is great but is heavier and hotter than the Boett.
the other horse is a rug wrecker. his Boett is shredded. the Hoodie is ok.
So am thinking of getting him an ordinary fly rug.
What rugs do you use on your horses? which are the strongest but coolest fly rugs? Which SI rugs are the best? Is a De Meuolenkamp as good as a Boett?

I like the rambo protectors for horses that aren't sweet itchy but need help from normal fly bother. they do snag but have held it together through two young geldings playing last summer.

One of mine has Sweet Itch so I put a Rambo SI hoody on him. It does the job, is easy to use, and he's fine with it. I've also got a Premier Equine SI hoody for him as well, PE are cheaper and do just as good a job, tho' sometimes their sizing is a bit random.

I did try a Pagony rug, which is supposed to be a cheap version of a Boett. Forget it if you're thinking of it. It was awful, badly made and the seams were only single stitched like you'd do on an old fashioned hand-propelled Singer machine!!! Somehow my boy got a foot caught up in the elastic strapping of it and was lucky not to be seriously injured. I'd never buy another.

Fly rugs?? I've just bought a Rambo fly rug on E-bay. Also have experimented with the Zebra stripe ones; not sure if they work or not as far as deterring flies is concerned. Will have to see for this summer.

IMO the cheap and flimsy fly rugs are not good value. My boy's record out in one of these is 4 hours from pristine new, to trashed!!! Not worth it - buy a decent rug would be my advice every time.

Do you find that they stay in place? I have an Amigo Bug Rug and although it fits well, it goes very tight on the chest and I was wondering if the Rambo version would be better?

They aren't bad-best fitting fly rugs I have found for my lot. I have two of the amigo bug rugs and not so keen-the older pony has one and it fits him perfectly but the big guy has one and its rubbish on him and yet nearly all his other rugs are amigos (but old ones).

I think they must be nicer to wear than the thick nylon-y ones-cooler, not that thats often a problem here! but I've tried a fair few and am solely using them now on two of them.

Charlie was Sweet itch, and he had a Boett and a Rambo Sweet itch Hoodie. I much preferred the Rambo for ease of use, and it worked.

Jay man does not have sweet itch, but we have an awful lot of horse flies, and we use the Shires Sweet Itch Hoodie. It is much cheaper and great up to about 26 degrees. If it is hotter than that he goes into an Amigo fly rug. Not as protective, but cooler.

Mine had very mild SI and wear a premier equine, but the problem is actually his face. He hadn't rubbed anywhere else at all this year which its good. Only problem I have with the PE is that the belly flap is velcro and his field buddy likes to take it off! I am actually looking to try a normal fly rug on him on windy days. I like the look of the Derby house as it has the ear holes and the belly flap with buckles, but am undecided...

I bought a Rambo protector this year & am very pleased with it. I've a narrow, high withered TB who's a rugging nightmare! I tried a ruggles last year but that slipped & was tight on the chest. The Rambo is fab & well worth the money, fit beautifully & doesn't slip back & go all tight & restrictive.

I have a horseware Aussie allrounder. It's solid like the si hoodie but no tummy or ears. It's white so reflects. She stays lovely and cool, the midges aren't biting which is a godsend as although she doesn't have si she does blow up like a balloon when bitten. No nicks so far, seems tough! Best bit is its only £60!
