Angel, when you first came to my yard you were so sad and so sick that you could hardly be bothered to go on living. Your foal had died in terrible circumstances and you had untreated mastitis and terrible ragwort poisoning. I was part of a brilliant team that brought you back from the brink and as you started to feel better, your character started to show through.
I think you will always be a little aloof - it must be hard to trust when you've had to just watch out for yourself your whole life. But you started to open up a little and I remember the day I came back from the Operation Esther run to the Horse Trust and I so needed to hug a loved horse and you stood there so quietly while I sobbed on your neck at the terrible things some humans do.
Then it became clear that you were ready to try to move on from being a sad "hospital patient" and you went off to a trusted trainer for backing. You came back only 2 weeks ago and I like to think we were both happy to see each other again.
I will never, ever be a brave rider Angel, and I never, ever thought I would be able to ride you, a newly backed horse, even though you are 12! But today, with plenty of support from my YO and some other understanding liveries, today you carried me on our 40 minute "round the block" ride. You didn't put a hoof wrong. You didn't jump or spook or frighten me. You weren't bothered by sheep or rattly lorries or cars. You trotted when asked and walked when asked and stood quietly when asked. When we stopped for a natter, you stood quietly and turned your head to sniff my toe and I like to think you were happy Mum was on your back. You carried me safely round as if you had been doing it years, rather than just newly backed.
Thank you Angel. You're worth your weight in gold. You have repaid everything we've all done to make you well again and give you life and a future.
Thank you sweetie xxxxx mum
