New arena is now up and running! The surface is silica sand topped with rubber and the sand is quite deep. The arena contractor told me to level it every day, so today, OH and I set about making a frame with 6" nails protruding through one end which would act like a rake. Well, I towed it behind my Forester and it worked brilliantly, but it's SO heavy that it took two of us to manoeuvre it, huffing and puffing, and I could never do it on my own. A chain harrow would be too light and barely rake the surface, so what i would love to know is what you use that can be easily hitched to my 4x4 by a weak and feeble woman (well, I'm actually certainly not that, but I'm sure you know what I mean!!) and leave the arena looking pristine! Also.........certain areas are really deep.......how long does it take to "settle". Help, please!

I've got one of these which I find very easy to manoeuvre into the manege and attach to my car (despite my user name I'm a woman!). You wind it up so it's pulled along on the tyres and then wind it down once it's attached to the towbar.

As for the question about certain areas being deep. I'm afraid some parts of my manege are still deep and it was put down in March. I'm going to give it a few more months and then contact the manufacturer.

You may not like this response but as far as I know the installer should have allowed the sand to settle before adding the rubber. Levelling it now will help but not as much as if you had levelled just the sand for a while (quite a few weeks depending on rain fall).

I have the Arena Mate which is very easy to maneuvre by myself:

It's very good value for money and I've had it for 6-7 years now and it's still going strong.
