Hi peeps


Im going to look at a j reg leyland daf

Any ideas on what to look out for?

Where do they rust etc?

Is there any problems i should be aware of??
 
Make sure it has a tilting cab. If you like the truck when you look, then get a good lorry mechanic to check it over before you buy.
 
They are lovely reliable lorries.
Check if/when the starter motor was replaced, these are a known Achilles heel.
Echo get good mechanic to look at it if u like it.
 
Rust! I've just has the replace my chassis. Engine was fine but the cab had rusted so much so that there was nothing to weld to and the whole lot had to be scraped!
 
They are supposed to be good reliable lorries BUT as everyone has said already rust is a real problem.

Be careful to check for loose wheel arches or steps due to rust - this is an MOT/plate failure and can cost a few hundred £s to repair. Also if possible peel back the rubber matting on the cab floor as this area can be really bad for rust. I looked at an alarming number that had the seats bolted onto a mix of fresh air and extremely corroded metal. This is dangerous as if you had to pull up sharp your seat would just come away!

TBH buy the newest chassis you can afford even if the box needs some work. You can DIY on the box to improve it as you go on, but a rusty chassis is a lot of expensive welding or a chassis swap.

Reliable as you like, cheap to run (in fact much cheaper than any of our cars), a bit of rust around the doors but do take a knowledgeable person with you to check.

I have had mine from new so only 84000 kms on the clock and I know her FSH ;)
 
Mine is a 1990 model too. I love it. So cheap to run, easy to drive with a great turning circle. Its not the fastest but it flies along once i wind it up.:p
The other great thing is that parts are quite cheap and my OH can do most of the work on it. ( We have had to weld bits of the cab but keep on top of it and its not a problem)
I have thought about changing it but if i get something newer i know it willl be far more expensive to fix if it goes wrong.
 
I have a 1996 Daf 45.150 and have had it since 2000. Brilliant lorry, flies through Mot every year, never broken down. Best thing I ever did was to fit an isolator, so the battery doesn't drain. Starts every time, even in the snow. Ps I work for a truck dealership and we sell and service Daf, Man and Iveco.... draw your own conclusions on which lorry I've got!!!
 
We have an L reg daf 45 150 engine and its a great engine. We had an isolator but I'm really annoyed as last time it went for a plating they didn't use it and have wrecked the batteries. They've never been the same since.
 
As has been said check out the cab for rust, arches & open up the bonnet & check for rust there as well.

Additionally have a close look at the fuel tank & also the air filter box, both of these rust badly.

If it still has tilting cab then that's a bonus as repairs will coast you less in labour as the mechanic can get at things easier.

Ideally have the 150hp one rather than the 130hp, there is a big difference in power & you'll notice when you've got a couple on board & you climb a hill. The extra 20hp makes the world of diference.

Fit an isolator to it, this will save the batteries from draining & you will never have problems starting the lorry.
