Are leylandii poisonous to horses? we need to create a windbreak by the paddock and it has been suggested we use Leylandii, but i don't want to plant anything that is poisonous.
Thanks
When you read up yes they are poisonous as there an Evergreen.
But our property has 1,000 of the things, when we put an offer in & it was accepted i rung my vets who put me in contact with a poisons unit at Liverpool.
They said in all the recorded poisonings of horses none had been down to Leylandii, but obviously the choice was up to me, but they seemed to help me make my decision.
My horses have been on the land now for 10 years & all's been fine. I also have visiting horses for rehabing in the summer & there fine also.
They don't touch the hedgerow tbh.
Mine are the standard lighter green type, i know there are many different types & maybe could be more dangerous than others. Be careful im not condoning Leyllandi but i personally have not had a problem. Good job really with a 1,000 of them. They do make the best hedging ever though!!
I did alot of checking too. I was told they are poisinous so cut our down and dug them up. Hawthorne hedge is good and the whips don't cost that much. Slow grower though compared to the conifer. Anything with a shiny leaf is also poisinous. I wouldn't take the chance. Better safe than sorry
Yes. Our land is divided by a row of lleyndii and every animal seems to head straight for it! It is all fenced off so they can't reach it but we have left them as they create a much needed shelter area. I pass some donkeys once in a while who are all in their forties and they are regularly given heaps of the branches to eat
