I wrote to Transport for London

I am writing to you because I feel I am being treated unfairly for a hobby I have had for 30 years. I have had my horses at the above address since I was a kid, living by Heathrow I have seen the increase in noise, pollution, traffic increase, more by laws etc, which has meant we cant ride the horses out on the roads as much, no green areas to ride, increase attacks by dangerous dogs the list is endless.

While I agree with LEZ and comply, I sold my old vehicle which was non compliant to get a vehicle which is, this was a huge outlay and I had to make a lot of scarifies for a hobby I love. In Jan 2012 I am now going to be in the same situation, I have phoned around and to have my current vehicle converted is £4000.00 of which I do not have, also which makes it very expensive considering I am only 1/2 a mile in the zone and only go out max twice a month in the summer, maybe once in the winter. I never travel into London or any further in the zone as we compete outwards towards Surrey etc. So what to I do for a 1/2 mile, what would you do???

I await your comments

THIS IS WHAT I GOT BACK
Low Emissions Zone
Thank you for getting in touch with us on 04.03.2011, about the LEZ
boundary.
We appreciate the comments you have made regarding this issue.
Unfortunately there are no exemptions to the LEZ scheme if you live w
ithin the boundary, or if you only travel a short distance into the zone.
If you have any questions regarding the Scheme you may find it useful to
visit our website, just log on to www.tfl.gov.uk/lezlondon. You may also
telephone our Contact Centre on 0845 607 0009, Textphone 0207 310 8999
(if you have impaired:mad:

it might be cheaper to give up on the box and hire for the days you need it

other than moving another 1/2 mile, i don't see what else you can do. i know it sucks but the boundry has to be some where.

it might be worth talking to others in the area and see about setting up a petition to the government, you could go as large as 1/2 mile round the whole of the area..just a thought

Im not sure but I think you will need a euro 4 lorry 2006 or newer or a old petrol bedford or a 4x4 and trailer , not been to london for years and so glad ! Sorry for people who have to live and work in that dump esp if money is tight....

How do they know you are in the zone and your vehicle doesn't comply???, are there cameras on every road like the congestion charge and does it still apply at weekends??

Their reply is a 'tough luck' attitude

It would really pee me off too.

Any chance of keeping the box outside the emission zone and riding your horse up to it?
Not ideal, but if it saves money while you decide on a more long term alternative?

I know Exactly how you feel as I had to sell my old lorry when LEZ first came in :( However I got round it by replacing with a 1973 tax exempt lorry... which was great BUT got stolen last year and set on fire :( I found another one Thank God..

This might be the way to go for you.. they are hard to find, but can be done and bonus is no tax, lorries are often a bit slower and wont have PAS but if like me you want to get out of london with the horses then I find this a good option as I cant afford to hire transport all the time.

Another option may be Petrol lorry or a trailer :)
Good Luck

4x4 and trailer might not work, my husbands Toyota Hilux is going to be non compliant from 2012. It's not just lorries, 4x4s are on the list too.

What on earth are all the builders in London going to do?

This is basically about the government forcing people to upgrade all vehicles. In times when the motor trade needs a boost, the easy way to force people to buy a newer vehicle is to make their existing one illegal. As for builders, most of our friends who are small builders, have simply had to sell their non compliant vans and buy newer one's. My husband has to drive into central longon on occasion and he had to change his car for that very reason.

Yeah they have cameras and the fine is HUGE.. I think you can pay a fee of something like £200 a day to drive in the zone with a lorry that doesnt comply but you have to book the day or something!! Its really not fair and I think in the current climate lots of buisnesses will really suffer :(

They tried to fine us once, they had a pic of the lorry in the zone, the people at LEZ werent not clued up at all as our lorry does comply being tax exempt.. so they couldnt fine us!!

Thank you everyone for your comments, I did have 4x4 and trailer, I hated towing and the horse hated it as much. Yes, they have cameras on the roads, it is so unfair as I only go out at weekends and towards Surrey never into London. A local policeman said I should let a bag blow over number plate as I go in and out LOL

This country sucks now !!!!!!!

Typical years a go I had an old bedford TK, sold it for PS

You can put your vechile reg and postcode in their website and it tells you

you can get spray to go over your numberplates so they cant be read - or just tape over them

This would be a great Idea but they will write to you a few months before they enforce it to let you know that you need to upgrade.. everyway you turn they have you :(

Im sure they will it is just so unfair, its alright for them having 2 houses and claiming for them and getting away with it !!!!!!!!!!

I agree could you store lorry outside the zone at only 1/2 mile away you can walk horses up to lorry and save yourself a fortune. Not ideal but it will save you alot of money.

I guess depends where OP is in London but to those who've suggested walking half a mile up the road to the lorry, it may not be as simple as it sounds. I used to ride out a lot around Rickmansworth, the traffic is terrible and lots of routes are segragated by busy roads that are simply too dangerous to use.

She said she lives near Heathrow which considering its included in the LEZ I would say the traffic must be awful! I do feel very lucky to live in Watford and horse in Rickmansworth (hackings not that bad get over to croxley green and the woods and sarrat :p!) as although inside the M25 its just about the only place that is exempt from the LEZ! Sorry nothing constructive or helpful but I do feel incredibly sorry for you, some rules are stupid....

You simply buy an ancient (say a 1979 one) 6 cylinder petrol Bedford TK as these are not included! They are excellent for London as they are nice and short being only 20 feet from the front bumper to the rear of the container so you can even do the shopping in them. Despite what others say parts are still available for them. You should get a nice one for under £2,000.00p.

I am not far from Hatton Cross Station, considering where we are the hacking is really good and all ours are very good in traffic, the problem parking outstide the zone is where and how much will it cost.

I'm another who sold a lovely lorry due to the LEZ, however these rules are not new, when it was introduced there was full information given about the forthcoming 2012 changes.
Any Olympic competitors with non-compliant lorries would just have to pay the daily charge, it's not that they will be exempt!

Never even heard of this until now! Sounds like a complete joke. What happens if there was an emergency, and you had to get your horses out?

please think about all the polution your lorry is causing im sure you wouldent want any of it getting on those nice clean planes just down the road !!!!!:D realy this would be funny if it wasn't costing so much, you would think borris would have a little bit less spite than red ken and work out something for small businesses and private folk on this issue....

Not really knowing much about this at all so i apologize if i seem ignorant, but could you not register the vehicle at an address outside the zone (but still keep it at your place, i dont suppose they come out & check do they?)....say your parents or something & then if you do need to use it just pay the daily charges, from the sounds of it you only use it handful of times a year, so you would save yourself alot of money.

As soon as the lorry moves within the LEZ zone, its number plate is captured and the owner will get a fine for not having paid the £200 a day entry fee. It doesn't matter what address the vehicle is registered at sadly.

I really feel for you peeps who are in this situation. To me the whole thing is just another way of taxing the people.
