I may need to get a lorry that can go into the LEZ so what I am wondering is how much the most basic 7.5 LEZ compliant lorry would cost.

I love my current lorry. It's an 1995 DAF, bit scruffy round the edges but ultra reliable. Payload of about 1.9t so can carry two big horses, actually stalled for 3 as it used to be 10t and got downrated to 7.5. Day living so somewhere to sit and cupboards to store junk. It's quite short so easy to drive and manoeuvre, real no frills workhorse lorry.

I wouldn't be looking for anything flash, just something basic with a decent payload but is even that going to cost a fortune?

Any thoughts and suggestions please.
 
Being LEZ compliant puts the price of the chassis up. For a Euro 4 Daf LF (registered new after 2/11/2006) your looking at upwards of 8K + Vat. Thats without the cost of converting a box or having a body coachbuilt.

I'm not 100% but think its 2014 that only euro 5 engines will be up to standard.

You might be able to have an exhaust filter fitted to your box, usually around 3.5k mark again that may only make it legal for a couple of years.
 
If you want a diesel engine that will be compliant for the next few years then you will need to buy a vehicle which is Euro 5 compliant. Just to give you some indication of cost a brand new 3 metre wheelbase basic cassis/cab alone will cost from about £36,000!
However if you could find an ancient Petrol Bedford TK because it is a petrol engined rather than diesel it is compliant with current London emmision zone leglisation!!!
 
Having the lorry converted is one option though it's alot to pay for a lorry that isn't worth that much. It still might be the cheapest option. Does how good or bad the emissions are to start with make a difference or is that a fairly standard price.

Peternatt are Bedford Mks the only petrol option?


Sbw are all chassis post 2006 compliant or was that just an example. it's such a local thing that most people don't bother to put it in adverts and I was trying to browse adverts.

Excuse the stupid questions but mechanics isn't my strong point.
 
You might want to give consideration to a trailer with living rather than splashing out on an LEZ compliant lorry. But do watch out that your tow car is LEZ compliant too! We live within spitting distance of the LEZ and a lot of people who need to travel into it have opted for trailers now. But to be honest most just avoid it. Shows, pony clubs and all sorts now take place outside the LEZ.
 
Avoiding it is not an option, I'm not talking about going through it or visiting but about needing it regularly for a horse in the LEZ

I did think about a trailer but apart from the fact I feel so much safer and more confident driving a lorry there is the cost issue.

I don't have a car so I would have to buy a car that could pull 2 big horses and a trailer.
Then where I live in London is an issue for insurance and so for a landrover or similar would be about £2000 a year when I looked on the comparison sites. My Lorry insurance is a tenth of that.

I guess the other option is look at the 3.5 lorries and accept I would only ever take one horse.
 
A 7.5 ton 6 cylinder Petrol Bedford TK with a good container would be a solution and you would be able to get a good one for very little money. (Take a look at ebay and type in Bedford TK). Be aware that they only do about 12-15 miles per gallon with 3 horses in the container.

It is the engine/exhaust system that has to be compliant. My example was just to illustrate prices for the smallest of new 7.5 ton vehicles.

Also pay a visit to Rush Green Motors (just up the A1) turn off at Welwyn and head for Codicote and then Rush Green as they have loads of old Bedfords.
 
If it is going to be so difficult and expensive, might be worth moving the horse outside the LEZ instead?

Fair question - but you only need to see some of the livery threads on here to know how difficult it is to find the right yard and if everything else was perfect, would you ask someone to move just because of transport?
