Unfortunately I fall into the category of having to do another test to drive my 7.5 tonne horsebox

Has anyone done there training and test? I know it costs a lot, but roughly how much?? (on the sites I've been looking on it looks like it will probably be in the region of £800 for training and test) I am going to have to take the training and test at some point. Does anyone know of any good training centres around herts/beds/bucks/essex areas? Thanks in advance for your help

The best part of a grand if you manage to pass first time! but then you wil have to shed out another grand if you wanna do your HGV at 21

not worth doing LGV if you can help it.

Oh right yeah definitaly do the HGV to be honest, because it gives you that opportunity now thing you can drive anything up to 44 ton! so if you ever get to drive like a ten horse lorry you can! also helpful if your ever out of a job or your lookign to groom somewhere. Wouldnt bother with the LGV to be honest not these days!

Ok I think I will do that then, then I am pretty much covered for whatever horse lorry I have! Probably a stupid question but if I have the class 2 HGV license would that be likely to make my insurance cheaper on my 7.5 tonne lorry?

Do you have to wait until 21 to take your HGV test? We've recently bought a 7.5 tonne horsebox

At the mo my mum drives it quite happily but because I only passed my test a few years ago (I'm 20 yrs old) I have to have my HGV license to drive it. Could I take it now or do I need to wait until I'm 21?? After taking this test does my age make a difference on insurance costs?

You have to do it if you pass your driving test after 1997. If you pass your test after this year you can only drive something up to 3.5 tonnes laden weight. Because I'm only 20 I passed my test just over 2 years ago so since 1997 and therefore I have to take my HGV test to drive that size of vehicle.

To drive up to and including a 7.5tonne vehicle you only need an LGV license, something that all drivers who passed their tests before 1997 will have. If your horsebox is over 7.5tonne ie an HGV lorry then you would need you HGV license. You can take your LGV test when you are 18. If I bought an HGV horsebox my dad even though he passed his test before 1997 would need to take his HGV test.

Oh right ok, well my box is 7.5 tonnes and I passed after 1997 so am I right in saying I only need my LGV test, which I can take now because I'm over 18

Thanks for clearing that up - sorry I'm so clueless! That makes a lot more sense now

Re taking my LGV test - what does that involve? Is it just a 5day course with the test at the end costing about £1k? Are there any theory tests involved? I presume you can take the test in your own horsebox making it slightly cheaper?

I think you can do intensive courses where everything is included. You have to do a theory and practical test

Was reading on DSA website and to apply for your provisional you have to have a medical first, then apply for provisional then you can start learning. Not sure if you can take it in your own horsebox but I don't see why not, I took my car test in my own car so shouldn't see a problem with that.
