LGV Test vs Trailer Test?

I'm trying to weigh up (haha) the cost of an LGV test vs a trailer test...

Can anyone advise? I have large horse (over 600kg) and I would envisage wanting to go out with another horse to most events - hence I think a 3.5t lorry is off the table. You seem to get more "payload" from a 2 x horse trailer than a 3.5t anyway?

I was thinking of maybe a 4.5 or a 5.5 ton lorry, as I don't think I'd need much in the way of living area and wouldn't need to travel 3.

I'm put off a 4 x 4 as I would need a beast to pull a 510 trailer and I have a 35 mile round trip commute to work everyday so fuel economy would be an issue.

Thoughts/opinions/help welcomed!!! :)

My mum and I are currently weighing up the same problem for my gap year/ uni. Don't forget the lgv does have to include getting medical and a harder theory test. Will be intested to see what other people say. Other problem is getting hold of the lighter weight lgv. Mostly 7.5 T around.

Yes, I think you're right. I have seen a few 6.5T lorries about though. A 3.5 would be fine if I only wanted to transport my horse but he's young so I'd rather take a friend for him to feel more relaxed with.

I guess the final calculation comes down to how much extra a week would you be paying in fuel to run a 4x4 compared with breaking down the cost of doing the LGV - e.g. after 2 years would the cost of the test be cancelled out by the savings in fuel? :D

Also I should probably add, I've been driving for 7 years and have a clean licence and no health issues so I don't see the medical as being a problem - I do know of someone who failed it on eyesight. :(

The HHO LGV INFO link in my signature below will sho whats needed to do LGV

Post number 1000 in the HHO TOWING CLINIC link below will sho whats needed for the B+E

The advantage of getting B+E is that no medical or theory required and once passed it lasts for as long as the B (car) licence is valid so generally for life

Passing LGV will require self certifying medicals every 5 years before age 45 and a full D4 medical every 5 years between ages 45 and 65 with yearly D4 medicals from age 65

Wow, thanks ROG. I had no idea about the regular medicals required. :( Looks like it's going to be the B + E then! :)
