I passed my test after January 99 but have been driving a 7.5 tonne lorry for about 6 years on L plates with someone sitting next to me who's over 21. I'm perfectly competant driving it and its really annoying having to drag someone out with me each time.
The thing is, I need to take my test but I can only find test centres who do 5 day training courses which cost a fortune.

Does anyone know of anywhere (preferably near Kent!!) that do maybe an assessment and then the test straight away? I know the test itself is about £150 but I really cant afford to spend over £1000 on training for a whole week

Thank you for any help

I would ring some places that offer the 5 day course, and ask them if would do it/ know somewhere that does?

I am interested in doing my LGV, what else do i have to do before i can drive on L plates?

As long as you are insured on the vehicle and you have someone who's over 21 sitting next to you (and they have their license to drive up to 7.5tonnes or above) then stick 'L' plates on and you can drive the vehicle

I did my HGV test for a category C license in November. My instructor said i could have done it in my own lorry, you would be able to book the theory test and the practical independently of any lorry training companies if your wish. You could always go along for an assessment drive - i did that before i did my training - if they think you are good enough then just book in for your test.
There are 3 manoveures involved in the test which you may want an instructor to go through with you before you do the test

You do need to apply for a provisional licence too. For this you have to fill in a form from the DVLA and also get you GP to fill in a medical form, also from the DVLA (that cost £80).

Soon as you have that you can drive as nomini says with someone sitting next to you over 21 who has their licence.

Thanks guys, think I'll call the centre then

Don't forget the person sitting with you has to have had their licence for 3 years - you won't fall foul of this if they passed before Jan 97 (obviously) and so have it on their licence anyway, but you might if they too have taken their LGV. I have only just become 'legal' to sit next to people!

And you will need to go through the 3 manouvers with an instructor and also all the 'pointing bits of the lorry' out as they need you to be able to do certain checks (like what do you check on the wheels to see if the nuts are loose etc). The reversing one is the one you'll need to go through.

Book an assessment drive and take it from there - most 5 day course places want you in for an assessment drive anyway so they can see if you'll need more or less time.

The medical form is D4 and I cant remember the other forms number but its just a normal application for a driving licence form.

Best thing to do is e mail the DVLA, give them the details and they e mail you back with the forms you need attached, thats what i did.

You have to take the theory test too, but as with cars, you can drive on your L plates before youve passed that

LGV is the same as HGV (just new phrasing - it stands for Large Goods Vehicle instead of Heavy Goods Vehicle which is the old phrasing). LGV Class 2 is up to 7.5T, LGV Class 1 is over 7.5T. The DSA website is the best place to get all the info you need www.dsa.gov.uk
