i moved my 2 horses to their own field on saturday, and the midges are really bad right now, they just seem to follow the horses everywhere, what is the best/safest product to use ?? are the wipes any good ?? can you use household fly spray?? would Avon Skin So Soft Dry Oil Body Spray be good ?? or are there any other household products i could use ? vaseline/sudocrem-would that keep them away? because if it is an actual horse fly spray i get i would have to order it and wait a few days but really need something now.today i noticed phoenix had lice, you could see them sitting on his head under his forelock.what is the best thing to use for that ?? i have no access to water atm.are there any home remedies i could use ?? someone mentione mayonnaise or cooking oil ?

For the midges if your horse will take it feed them garlic :) My horse personally loves garlic but other horses on the yard spits it back at you  With the lice, I actually had the same issue yesterday seeing them on my new mare so we used the powder on her and you just use a brush and groom it in to their coat :) good luck :)

Sudocreme inside ears. It contains Benzyl Benzoate (sp?) which kills midges so they keep away. My YO put me onto it this year as I get a lot of midges in the fields I rent from her. I spent the whole of last summer wrestling with my big lad to get Coopers on the outside of his ears and I was telling my YO this. She said that she believes horses will "fight" things that they don't consider good for them. I went for his ears, half-heartedly with the Sudocreme and he stood like a rock and let me cream INSIDE! And now he lets me do it every time without a peep, loose in the field (this really was previously unheard of!) I couldn't believe how different he is. I guess he really WAS trying to tell me something!! :o

i have tried sudocrem but hasnt helped:confused: so will be ordering stuff tomorrow,

IS THIS LOUSE POWDER A GOOD PRODUCT,IF YOU HAVENT USED IT PERSONALLY,DO YOU THINK IT WOULD BE GOOD ?

(100% natural insect repellent for use against blood sucking and biting lice. Designed for direct application to horses and cattle. Suitable for use in organic farming systems. One application remains active for up to six weeks depending on weather conditions. Note: Efficacy will be affected if used in conjunction with chemical based products. HSE 8712 Store in a cool, dry place)
CAN THE POWDER BE PUT ON IN THE FIELD ?? WOULD IT HARM THEM IF THEY BIT/LICKED IT ??
DOES THIS ONE SEEM GOOD ?

WOULD IT GET RID OF LICE OR JUST PREVENT ?? WIPES WOULD BE ALOT EASIER FOR DOMINO AS HE IS SOO SCARED OF SPRAYS/WATER/AND PROBABLY POWDER.AND FOR MIDGES/FLYS WOULD AVON SKIN SO SOFT BE GOOD?

the best product I have found for lice is called "switch" and comes from your vet.
It is very effective and very easy to apply. It is a liquid and you just use a small quantity (dependent on the horse's weight) and pour it over the horse's back. Takes seconds and doesn't stress the horse.
