Lice and Rugs?

Little one has lice... deosect is on it's way and will be disinfecting them all when it arrives. Even though I haven't seen any lice on the others they live out together 24/7 so I'd be as well just doing them all.

Wondering if putting rugs in a hot wash and then re-proofing will be enough or will they need to be disinfected too?
 
Hi my experience of the illegal immigrants – they do spread to other horses but my Shetland with a thicker coat had loads ! I clipped her in the end to get rid of them and dosed with powder 4 times. I just powdered the rugs and they were all gone within 6 weeks. I felt like a bad mother and unclean LOL X good luck they will soon be gone !
 
Thanks for your replies! I would take great pleasure on sticking them in the hottest wash possible to burn the wee ******* to death ;)

She isn't massively infested with them, have only just noticed them so I'm hoping I've caught them early enough to avoid having to clip her. I know what you mean about feeling like a bad mum Abby-Lou, I feel terribly guilty, like I've neglected her and made her dirty!
 
When the old cob lady had them, we put a decent dose of coopers in a plastic bag with the rug and steamed it for about 20 minutes, worked a treat.
 
When my lot were invaded by them a couple of winters ago i had real problems getting rid of them, tried all the obvious remedies from powder to coopers, even redosed weekly. In the end the only thing that got rid of Them was cow version of swish, its not licenced and can burn if put on too close and thick next to the skin, but it lasts 28 days at least so gets them as they hatch ! The rugs i took to my rug wash people, i asked first as thought it only fair, they said no probs, they wash at 60degrees whitch kills them off and used a special detergent too, i did spray with some stuff too just to be sure. Biggest problem was not rugging for a few weeks, ended up being 6-8 weeks inthe end ! Just as the weather started to get really cold and wet. Never understood where they came from, im on my own yard and had no new ones for over 2 years- vets said would have come from cows across the lane or the sparrows in the roof ???? Really knocked horses for six, especially my old boy. Thankfully they've never returned
 
Definately no, sadly its probably already got them, either way you will need to treat both and at the same time to prevent them getti g reinfested, you will also need to treat the rugs too, lice lay eggs in them which will hatch and just keep reinfesting them if you dont, its a real pain but you have to strike quickly or you will struggle to get rid of them. You will need to treat any others that are near them too, Best of luck
 
Give them all a good dose of a mectin based wormer - these wormers kill anything that moves except the horse!

Lay the covers out flat and sprinkle louse powder into them - they can only live a short time away from a host so if you can do this for a couple of days it would increase the massacre.

It's early for lice too - they usually like the warmer weather coming into spring. Are you sure its definitely lice and not dandruff!

Are you scratching furiously? Whenever I've treated the horse for lice I've felt all itchy.

I've noticed a big decline in lice over the past 20 years or so especially since Ivomec appeared on the scene.
 
Thanks, my little pony has had them already this yeah, seriously considering getting him hogged as he has a very thick mane and tail and we just cant seem to get rid of them. Literally used every product you could think of last time we must have missed some eggs :( my other pony never seems to pick them up
 
Just a word of warning if you have Velcro on your rugs. I washed one of my numnahs on a hot wash when my pony had lice and the Velcro backing shrank horribly. It was never the same....
