Lice, deosect, clipping?

I've found lice on my pony 😩 ordered deosect to arrive tomorrow. Pony is native Welsh with very thick, shaggy hair - what is the best of way of going about this? Can I literally wash her in this stuff (diluted of course)? I don't think spraying her is going to penetrate her coat. Wondering if I'm going to have to clip her... She has never been clipped, and I have no idea how to go about it. Thoughts?

Thanks in advance ☺

Thank you!

I'm wondering if it's going to be too cold to wash her liberally tomorrow... Max of 5 degrees and 2 degrees by 6 pm. Not sure what to do as she looks a bit miserable and itchy at the moment 🙁

Are you sure it's not one you pour on the back? Then repeat in two weeks to catch the newly hatched ones.
Don't worry too much, you'll soon get on top of them.

@Gloi like a spot on type of thing? I think the one from I've ordered from the vets is the solution that is diluted with water 🙂

She looks very put out and is obviously itching constantly, but doesn't look like it's warm enough to wash her safely until Sunday! But will feel like a right cow if I leave her untreated until then... Does anyone here wash their horses in cold weather?

I am a worry wart!!

Yes I meant a spot on one. It's going to be a horrid week so maybe you could do the places like under the mane where lice collect with a sponge then bath her once it stops being sub zero.

You won’t be getting her soaking wet. You dilute it and use a sponge so you don’t need to drench her. I’ve used it on a hairy native in winter and they were fine.

Deosect is great for lice, but I’d do a patch test first. It can cause a reaction though.

Deosect needs a lot of diluting and even then it’s very strong. Follow the instructions very carefully. Try not to prepare any more than you actually need as it needs to be used up fairly quickly and is extremely polluting to aquatic life so do not pour or rinse anything down the sink or drain, even foul sewer. You can sponge it on but wear thick rubber gloves. I keep a covered container with it in and any sponges etc. I don’t use it often only when midges and especially ticks are bad and and am extremely careful how it is used. I’m paranoid about using it when bees are around as it will kill them. Also do not allow any other animals near it especially cats.

I had to soak one with it in the dead of winter years ago, I just made sure I kept her in and rugged her up warm. She was fine, and had no more creepy crawlies after that.
