Going to be very brave here! I feel absolutely awful & just thought I'd get some opinions whilst I'm waiting for the vet to call back!

My ponies first showed signs of having lice around 10 days ago (2 out of 3 ponies showing thinning of hair on face and chest, they are NF fillies, both very hairy). I treated all of them with Coopers 2 days later. All rugs, brushes etc have been taken away to be cleaned. I re-ordered some more coopers to reapply in 10 days (although with the rain I doubt I'll do it tonight)

I thought great, that'll sort it out. They were treated with it when I bought them so was confident it would work.

Well. They've got worse. One pony in particular. She has lost ALL her hair at her 'armpits'and down her back legs, starting to go round her abdomen as well. If you touch it it just comes away in clumps. Her coat is looking scraggly (sp??!), she looks awful....:( They've both got loads of dead skin too. The second filly doesn't look so bad but has lots hair down her neck/chest and armpits, her main body is less affected.

My third pony is starting to show slight patches across his back and face. None of them have been itchy, the skin is normal, not red or inflamed at all. All the ponies are well within themselves, eating and drinking well and bright and healthy. I don't know whether to try and brush all the dead hair out or not...Feeling really bad today, the rain is really coming down :(

The first pony is really starting to look like a charity case :(

My brother and his partner are vets, so I spoke to them before the weekend. They said it sounds like lice and not to be too concerned, to treat for the second time as planned then go from there. I've grown more concerned so have called the vets, now waiting for them to call back.

I have only seen ONE LOUSE and that was on the third pony when I took his rug off. I check them daily and have seen no others at all. I feel awful, they look horrendous. I've never seen anything like it in my 17 years of having horses!

Pictures: Taken Sunday.

In this one you can see the line between her coat and where she has no hair left...

Do you think it's lice? The only other think I thought of was mange.... that makes me itch all over thinking about it! I have more pictures that I'll upload when I get a minute!

Advice and suggestions please!!

I have two ponies here with severe hair loss, I called the vet as couldnt see any lice and it's mites!! Injections three weeks apart, so might be a vet job just in case it's mites and not lice.

Hi Gracie

I am keen to follow this tread as i am having the exact same issue with my 3 year old Clydesdale gelding, i have only had him 6 weeks and he has lots of leg mites so he has had two injections of dectomax 2 weeks apart, this apparently only kills mites and not lice, he has the exact same symptoms as your guys and the hair is coming away im my hand with dandruff flaky bits on it, he is rubbbing nibbling and inching started loosing haoir last thursday all of a sudden and has been getting ichier ever since,, the vet took a clump of hair away but found no lice, i have took ten clumps from differnt areas and only found one single lice. so not sure if it is lice or allergic reaction to something. if you find anything out please post as it has to be the same thing. i might treat with lice powder but im worried if it is allergic reaction that putting lice powder on could make matter worse. please keep us posted! and i will too : ) good luck

Mites are the cause of mange and it does look characteristic of it. Skin scrapings can be taken, but they're not always conclusive. Treatment is by benzyl benzoate or similar. There are injections which can be given, too. If vet advises BB (not sure if it's licensed, but sure it must be, if Hyperdrug sell it as an animal pharmacy!), the best place I've found is Hyperdrug (unless you want to play Dirty Gertie in the local chemist...).

I have just brought all of mine that were turned away for winter up to the farm and around half of them look like that - if not worse! Some were riddled in lice and believe me looked like charity cases with large bald patches on neck/ face while a few fit healthy middle aged with no foals looked beautiful with barely any lice!

All have just had their second treatment of flypor and are already looking better and are getting some coat back! I really recommend the stuff even thought its not licensed for horses, you can literally see the lice dieing within a few minutes of applying!
