Lice

Got a horse on the yard which has got a small lice infection. Have some insecticide shampoo that is supposed to do the job but when vet was out this morning he said he uses louse powder as it saves bathing them, and left us a pot. Was about to use it but reading the back it says it is not for use on animals but is more for bedding and buildings etc. It's main ingredident is permethrin (sp) which is the active ingedient you need to treat lice but I wondered if anyone had used it before directly onto their horse?
It's in a dark blue container with a picture of a farm yard on the front if that helps - I cant remember the actual name

I'm sure it will be fine, not least because the vet gave it to you. Down here in the forest, a lot of the commoners use ant powder (active ingredient permethrin) to de louse their ponies with no ill effects (apart from to the lice)

When I was younger we used to use it direct on the ponies if we thought they had lice? Used to rub into their coats the opposite way but make sure it isnt a windy day or if it is don't stand downwind as you get a face full of it! Sure it must be the same stuff,it has sort of a shaker thing like talcum powder.

My vets said no louse powders are much good but if you're going to buy one, get Battles ... but don't be put off that it says on the container not to use on animals! THE one and only louse killer extraordinaire is Frontline (spray). Not cheap, but then most things that actually work aren't. Sadly.

My equine vet, who is very highly thought of, recommends either Lincoln or Battles louse powders, the ones that says NOT for use on horses. I found them both very effective. You could also try Deosect, which is a Fly Spray for horses, so can be used as a fly spray and a lng-term louse deterrent.

Coopers fly repellent plus does the trick! I treated mine left her two weeks and then bathed with an insecticidal shampoo (just to be sure) and reapplied the coopers as per the instructions and it's worked fine... aparently many of the powders are rubbish. you also need to change bedding and wash rugs really...
