Well my two minis have been wintered out this year. No rugs. brought them in so i could clip Inky to check his condition and start to get him ready for the shows. I got the first few strokes off and was horrified. His skin was a complete mess, full of scabs and he looked moth eaten. I wasnt sure what it was so thought id better clip Ty too. Well its definatley lice. hundreds of them

. I feel so bad ive never had a horse with lice but there coats have been so thick you just couldnt tell. I swear it was 2 inches in some places.

So.... wasnt intending on a full clip but Inkys all off and clippers gave way half way through Ty so going to finish him off tomorrow. Ive some medicated shampoo and louse powder, so baths tomorrow and im to pick some spray thingy from the vets too.

So is there anything else i can do to get rid of the frecking buggers?? ive two really nice deep shavings bed i presume ill have to empty tomorrow. I was going to just put a couple of slices of straw down for each of them and totally clear the beds every day till they have gone. Ive also had to rug them tonight but after the bath and powder ill replace those with clean ones. Any other suggestions?? Im totally gutted. inkys coat is ruined, no shows for several months now and i feel ive let them down

Also they havent been in contact with any other horses so where would they have come from??

good luck

I believe Ivometin (sorry spelling) is the best course of action. My sisters ponies got it bad last year and this was the only thing that really killed the critters. Vet will give them an injection two weeks apart (second time to get eggs missed from first time round). NB most vets will only use it if infestation is bad, otherwise they`ll probably give something like Barricade to spray on.

I feel for you, i have just bought a young Welsh D and he is covered as well, thought we got rid of them but apparently not. His coat is a mess. I really dont want to bath him as he is like a hat rack and the yard has no warm water, or anywhere to bath him but in the yard. Im well fed up.

we have had abit of a lice outbreak at work, our miniture bought them in and spread it to the rest without being in direct contact with them, our appolosa mare got it really bad that she is now on antibiotics for an infection in her back legs coz she chewed them and made wounds, have u clipped there heads and legs? if you havnt then i advised u do so, the lice move to where there is more hair so they will start rubbing there heads and itching the tops of there tails, become abit of an expert in the little blighters latley treating them all at work.

not sure. Think my sister had the two injections......... which killed the majority of them........and then got the few bugs that were left with Coopers fly spray.

The pony I have just picked up also has lice (arggggghhh) and have just sprayed the once with the barricade the vet prescribed. It was a royal pain in this weather as I needed his rug off to do it and then a patch of dry weather to let it dry and not wash off with any rain. He is palomino so it is a bugger to spot them against his colouring. Next spray is due in 10 days.

Wanted vet to use injection but apparently it is not licensed for horses so vets only like to use it for worst cases and try the spray first. One of my sisters ended up losing a lot of condition with the lice hence the use of the injection.

I know im gutted. I spoke to the vet about the injection but they suggested the spray first, think its called something beginning with "D" ive forget the name. How long do they usually take to go?

we are still treating ours now after a month or so just because they had it bad, there life cycle is about 21-30 days from hatching to a larvae than to and adult and they lay alot of eggs!

Last time one of my mini's had lice the vet gave me some stuff (sorry cant remember the name), you poured it on down the mane and centre of their back, it was for cattle, not licensed for use on horses but it worked and was quick. If I remember rightly you reapplied after two weeks, was so much easier to use then any horsey products around.

Hey you, don't panic! You should see the state of Pops, she's covered in lumps and scabs and we're still not sure why.
She's been doused in coopers plus and frontline as vet thought originally lice but there isn't a single critter on her, she's now on a smidgen of bute and antibiotics as some of the lumps were infected, we've had hives, lumps, scabs, weird round holes, bald patches - we *think* it's a food allergy but if it's not confirmed in the next few days then I think she's going to end up with all sorts of tests

Anyway, don't panic about his coat, Pops' old scabs and bald patches have grown in since she was clipped 3 weeks ago, if it wasn't for the new lumps and scabs, if she was reclipped, you wouldn't know. Am still aiming for MHCGB in april atm lol.
Will send you some pics of her to make you feel better

Don't feel bad, they are prime targets and those winter coats could house anything that wanted to move in!
I *think* but may be completely wrong, that they can host a few 'summer lice' (that's the way it was described to me!) through the year that go mostly un-noticed but once their coat sets in the lice can then run riot through the winter.
Get the buggers gone and no one will be any the wiser in a few weeks

Was it Deosect they recommended?

My mini Shets live out without rugs etc and have had lice before that seem to come from nowhere, think I have read that they can come from the ground rather than other horses?

Mine (touchwood) have never had them too bad and I spray them twice, with a one/two week break, with Frontline that you use for cats/dogs and that seems to work.

Coopers fly repellent. Kills anything with legs stone dead!
Use it on Little stig when he had them, and recently when the NF foals came home harbouring them.
Two applications, 2 weeks apart, and being mini's a bottle will last you ages!

Butox - I was advised by a mini friend to get hold of some of that when we thought P's was lice.
