Hi, my miniature has lice... again. Can anyone recommend me something which works? I used Deosect last time which did the trick but he seemed to have a bit of a reaction to it so I don't want to risk using it again (it was diluted correctly and I followed the instructions). Is there anything milder out there which actually works? I won't be bathing or clipping him at this time of year so a powder would be ideal. Do they actually work though? Also, are there some ponies which are just prone to getting lice? Not even the pony he shares a paddock with has caught them from him. Thanks.

I don't think any of the poweders work. I had this problem with my shetland. Each year I thought I had got rid of the buggers and as soon as his winter coat grew, it became apparent they were back. He has no rugs and was living out, so they were not in his bed. In the end I resorted to clipping him completely and bathing him in lice shampoo - over and over again, it was the only thing that worked. I tried Coopers and I also tried the jab from the vet. Even if it means you spend the money on a rug for this winter, it is worth the cost, if you clip him out , you can wash him properly as many times as you need to.

Coopers works, but it is very expensive to keep drenching a very hairy pony with. The powders don't work at all. The problem is these hairy ponies have such dense coats, the powders and liquid don't actually get to the skin to kill the eggs.

yep. I second coopers. Mine was crawling when she arrived. Killed them really quickly. Was so satisfying to watch them shrivel and die. mwah ha ha.

Coopers, it's really good stuff, make sure you do a patch test first as per instuctions.

Wash all rugs and grooming equipment and get rid of any straw and bedding and also wash all stabling out.

If the problem continues and your horse is a hairy beast then I'm afraid the only way you will clear them up is by clipping your horse out and then using the treatment.
