The donkey has lice!!!!! So i am treating him and all the ponies, washing rugs and brush's etc. The question is where do the b***ers come from? None of them mix with other horses. Thanks in advance.

Lice are tiny parasitic insects that live in the hair coat of horses or other animals. Lice are species specific, bird lice won't live on people or dogs for example. And you're not likely to get lice from your horse, or pass them on to your pets. However, given the right species, lice live anywhere they can find a warm home and meal. They can be common in stables like racing stables, where close quarters and shared equipment make the spread of lice easy.

The only type of lice that favor another species are those found on poultry and these very occasionally affect some horses. We had a couple of horses infected this way on a yard that shared chickens when the chickens were walking into the stables.

The lice are transferred from horse to horse by direct contact or through shared brushes, blankets and equipment.
