lick granuloma (sp?) - any tips

My thin skinned lurcher has managed to make a small scratch on his back leg into a thickened but healed up bald lump which he now won't leave alone. Anybody have any tips on how to get them healed up so they won't lick at them continually.

By the way, he has a buster collar on at night and I have made him some pyjamas for the day time (yes, really) but would like to dispense with both! The area is just below his stifle and is not infected or raw.

I would have him checked by your vet.....there are varied reasons why he may be doing this

Previous injury
Skin related problems
Nervousness/obsessive compulsive disorder
Skin tumours.....this is just a few reasons, there are many more.

Sometimes they can become very tingly/itchy....which could be why he is licking....sometimes they require medication/antibiotics.....you need to find out why he is licking and what the granulation is.

You need to keep the hood on him to stop him chewing and licking until you can have him checked.

Thanks CALA. He has been to the vet and had antibiotics twice. They had him in to maybe remove the area then decided not to as they were concerned about the skin in that area knitting together well. They did say they would send a bit away for analysis. They said leave it a bit longer but I'm not sure how long to wait?? I will take him back again though.

My boxer had one of these on her hock when she was about 14 months old. Not quite sure how she did it but one afternoon it looked liked she had just scuffed her hock and then it developed into a lick granloma. She kept knocking the top off it and licking it.. took her to the vets who told me to keep my eye on it and try to discourage her from bothering it and if in time it wasn't healing to go back for a/b's. Thankfully it disappeared shortly after and never returned. Looked pretty painful though at the time!!
